The OTA on Wednesday was open to the media, and there was a particularly rich and juicy twitter feed available. Injury updates, Jerry Jones reaffirming his stand on Mike Jenkins, and some developments in the battle to make the team among the wide receivers.
So take a look at what the reporters had to say, and then I'll have a few comments about it.
JUMP NOW!
The team got a break today from the Texas sun, as some thunderstorms moved practice to the Palace.
Rob Phillips |
OTA practice has been moved indoors to Cowboys Stadium due to inclement weather, and Talkin' Cowboys will resume Thursday at noon instead. |
Nick Eatman |
Demarcus ware and Jay ratliff noticeable no shows during Wednesdays OTA practice at cowboys stadium |
Josh Ellis |
Practice is underway at Cowboys Stadium with some walk through stuff. No Ware, Ratliff or Spears again ... Of course no Mike Jenkins. |
Nick Eatman |
Rookie CB Morris Claiborne is on the field but still not practicing with the wrist injury. Looks like he's just shadowing the right corners |
Rob Phillips |
Pass just went Claiborne's way during the walkthrough drill at right corner. Wisely he didn't fully try to catch it. |
Bryan Broaddus |
In pre practice it looks like Mo Claiborne is working on the right side. This is where he played at LSU |
Tim MacMahon |
DeMarcus Ware, Jay Ratliff and Marcus Spears among missing at Cowboys OTA. Ratliff, Spears dealing w/ injuries. Not sure what's up w/ Ware. |
Josh Ellis |
Nothing wrong with a nice 72 degree practice inside the stadium after the team's been out in the Valley Ranch heat since April. |
Bryan Broaddus |
Tyrone Crawford is stretching but doesn't have a helmet next to him so he still appears like he will be OUT today. |
Todd Archer |
No sign of Ware, Spears, Ratliff, Lissemore, Jenkins, FJones, MJohnson, KWilber, MBernadeau, DCoale at voluntary OTA. |
Todd Archer |
Ratliff has foot injury. Spears has neck. Coale has foot. Wilber has finger. Felix has shoulder. |
Rob Phillips |
Don't see third-round pick Tyrone Crawford (calf) out there again. That's five of seven draft picks again out. |
Todd Archer |
Dan Connor, Alex Albright working conditioning. Both recovering from shoulder surgeries |
Josh Ellis |
The D-line is pretty thin today with no Ratliff or Spears. Tyrone Crawford (calf) isn't practicing and there's no sign of Sean Lissemore. |
Todd Archer |
Kevin Kowalski and Jermey Parnell back to practice after missing last week's session that was open 2 media. |
Bryan Broaddus |
How important is it for WR to play special teams in order to make this team? Only Austin and Bryant don't practice during this period. |
Josh Ellis |
Witten spending the special teams portion of practice working with the TEs coach. Teaching John Garrett some things. |
Josh Ellis |
Dwayne Harris probably needs to be a return factor to make this team, but couldn't get under the ball just now. I'd still want Dez to do it. |
Rob Phillips |
Dez is such a natural at PR...gotta think the Cowboys would rather have someone else step up and do it, though. |
Bryan Broaddus |
Watching the OL work, Callahan is teaching the line to shuffle two steps sideways then work up the field to get man. Have never seen that. |
Tim MacMahon |
Dez Bryant is working as a punt returner. Jerry Jones is here, hasn't stopped practice in protest. |
Josh Ellis |
Harris muffed the next punt. This is how the depth chart gets set going into training camp. |
Clarence Hill |
Ota thoughts. Why is Stephen mcgee still here. Cowboys signed Rudy carpenter for a reason. They know what mcgee is and isn't |
Clarence Hill |
That demarco Murray looks like a professional running back. Yeah he looks good with ball in his hands |
Clarence Hill |
Dwayne harris muffed punt is not going help his cause. He was not impressive as a rookie. And does nothing great |
Clarence Hill |
Jerry jones said he is not listening to offers for mike jenkins. He said he means more to the cowboys |
Clarence Hill |
Jones said nobody needs jenkins more than the cowboys |
Nick Eatman |
Jerry jones said he's not listening to trade offers for Cb mike Jenkins "nobody needs Jenkins more than the Cowboys" |
Clarence Hill |
Jerry jones said he decides when window is closing (not romo). He sees a sense of urgency. That's his perspective |
Todd Archer |
Jerry Jones said Cowboys will not pursue any further legal action in the salary-cap case. Why? "Because I don't want to." |
Todd Archer |
Jerry Jones reiterates the Cowboys are not trading Mike Jenkins. "Nobody needs Mike Jenkins more than the Cowboys," the owner |
Josh Ellis |
Jerry says he's not listening to offers for Jenkins... Wouldn't take a future pick for him. Still think player for player might be possible. |
Josh Ellis |
That is my thinking, I should say, not Jerry's. Still sounds open to me. |
Calvin Watkins |
Watching DeMarco Murray run here at OTAs and he has a burst and quickness. |
Rob Phillips |
Jerry said he doesn't mind Dez back on PR if there's a long field. Translation: probably rather not have him back there full time. |
Josh Ellis |
Jerry also says he won't go to federal court over the salary cap penalties. Case closed. |
Rob Phillips |
"Not that I can think of" when asked a scenario for trading Jenkins that makes sense. Including a player? |
Clarence Hill |
Jerry said he can't see a scenario in which he would trade jenkins. Didn't want to talk hypotheticals. But reiterated he means more to cows (sic) |
Rob Phillips |
Sean Lissemore has a rib cartilage injury |
Tim MacMahon |
Jerry said there's no way he'll trade Mike Jenkins for a draft pick. "No team needs Jenkins more than the Cowboys." |
Bryan Broaddus |
Been seeing a lot more of Rob Ryan using safeties in that nickel linebacker role trying to be physical at point vs run but cover too |
Brandon Geoge |
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said there is no trade scenario he'd consider for CB Mike Jenkins. No matter the draft pick. |
Bryan Broaddus |
Dwayne Harris getting his shot with the 1s in nickel three wides package as the team works in 7 on 7. |
Bryan Broaddus |
Radway looks too stiff running routes. There is no flow to his movement right now. No quickness. |
Josh Ellis |
I don't remember Randy Moss slipping out of too many cuts. |
Rob Phillips |
My take on Jenkins hasn't changed. I believe them that they value depth at CB. But it wouldn't shock me if they said yes to a great offer |
Rob Phillips |
If they really want to win now though, a pick just doesn't make sense. Would have to be a player. |
Rob Phillips |
And yes, there are some injuries. Still May last time I checked though. Better to have them now than October. |
Bryan Broaddus |
Hatcher got around Smith pretty easily there. Smith got no punch. Would have been a sack on Romo. |
Bryan Broaddus |
Normally Murray pretty solid on blitz pickup. Bruce Carter worked Murray's edge who was unable to adjust. |
Josh Ellis |
What a difference a week makes. Saalim Hakim with a really nice adjustment to a high ball and catch. |
Bryan Broaddus |
Two practices in a row that Costa has had a bad shot gun snap that led to a sack. Team in two minute now. |
Bryan Broaddus |
I don't know why the coaches don't play Victor Butler but rushing the passer, he has been hard to block on twist. |
Bryan Broaddus |
I am liking this kid Madison from Arkansas. He looks short but you can't get away from him, ask Holmes the last two plays. |
Bryan Broaddus |
Teddy Williams actually made a play on the ball down the middle of the field to Beasley. While CJ Wilson didn't. Touchdown. |
Rob Phillips |
Touchdown, Kevin Ogletree. |
Josh Ellis |
A nice lob by Orton and TD catch in the back of the end zone by Ogletree, closing out the two minute drill and today's practice. |
Rob Phillips |
DeMarcus Ware has a slight neck strain...sat out today as a precaution. Remember, voluntary May OTA. |
Charean Williams |
DeMarcus Ware and Marcus Spears have neck strains. Jason Garrett said Ware should practice tomorrow. |
Calvin Watkins |
Demarcus ware has a minor neck injury and should practice tomorrow. |
Charean Williams |
Rookie Kyle Wilber had the pins out of his right index finger, so he now is able to start conditioning work. |
Charean Williams |
Jay Ratliff is out rehabbing a foot injury. |
Calvin Watkins |
Kyle Wilber had the pins removed from his rt index finger. He might be available for vet minicamp. |
Todd Archer |
DeMarcus Ware has little bit of neck strain. That's why he didn't practice today. Should be back Thur. |
Clarence Hill |
cowboys coaches led by jason garrett giving the media a coaching session film tutorial on cowboys schemes and how they install them.. |
Clarence Hill |
each coach breaking down the responsibility of their position players on each play.offense and defense.greatness.and they are being critical |
Clarence Hill |
At least rob ryan is..they are showing us film from practice |
Clarence Hill |
For the dez critics..it was shown a couple of times on film, coincidentally, where dez made the right decision and adjusted his route 4 blitz |
Clarence Hill |
now doing a session with special teams coach joe decamillis |
Clarence Hill |
this film teaching session for media was started under wade phillips a couple of years ago..couldnt do it last year because of lockout.. |
Clarence Hill |
But Jason Garrett liked it and brought it back to help us do our job |
That's a lot of tweets to read through, so here are a few thoughts that came to mind for me:
- No matter where you stand on the Mike Jenkins situation, it does seem to be a bit of a distraction. I still think he should be in Dallas doing his rehab, but that's just me.
- The comments about Dwayne Harris and Raymond Radway are not good signs. But it was nice to see something postive about speed merchant Saalim Hakim. And the Tree may be making a comeback after all.
- I liked the Carter sighting.
- Good to hear DeMarco Murray is looking to be back in form.
- Josh Ellis gets my vote for tweet of the day:
Witten spending the special teams portion of practice working with the TEs coach. Teaching John Garrett some things.
- Man, I wish I could sit in on those film sessions.
That's it for Wednesday's session - enjoy the information overload before we come back with even more from today's session.
