The first day of the draft is only 99 days away, and as if to celebrate that, five NFL Network analysts unveiled their first mock drafts simultaneously in a veritable mock draft bonanza.
The five Cowboys picks are: Utah DT Star Lotulelei, Michigan OT Eric Fisher, Missouri DT Sheldon Richardson, North Carolina OG Jonathan Cooper and LSU safety Eric Reid. Here's what the analysts had to say about each of the five prospects
Analyst | Pick | NFL.com comments | Next five available players | My Take |
Bucky Brooks | DT Star Lotulelei, Utah |
Monte Kiffin needs an athletic defensive tackle capable of playing the one or three technique to implement his vaunted Tampa 2 scheme in Dallas. | OT D.J. Fluker, ILB Manti Te'o, OLB Dion Jordan, S Kenny Vaccaro, DT Sheldon Richardson |
In the unlikely case that the Cowboys end up with the best defensive tackle in the draft, Monte Kiffin will be laughing all the way to a top five finish for his defense. |
Gil Brandt | Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan |
Fisher, who has tons of upside, could step in and start at right tackle immediately for the Cowboys, whose troubles on the line were well-documented in 2012. | ILB Manti Te'o, TE Zach Ertz, DE Barkevious Mingo, WR Keenan Allen, DT Shariff Floyd | This pick is contingent on what the Cowboys do with Doug Free and whether they address the ROT position in free agency. |
Josh Norris | Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri |
The Cowboys are implementing a four-man front under new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. Richardson would fit nicely at three-technique, offering enough positional versatility to play end in a three-man front if the defense reverts back to its previous scheme. | DE Alex Okafor, OG Jonathan Cooper, ILB Arthur Brown, S D.J. Swearinger, OT Lane Johnson | Richardson finished with 75 tackles (just four off the team lead) last year, and added 10.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, three PBUs and 7 QB hurries in 11 games. That's impressive production for a DT. |
Daniel Jeremiah | Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina |
No comments from Jeremiah | LB Alec Ogletree, ILB Mati Te'o, DE Sam Montgomery, S Kenny Vaccaro, WR Justin Hunter |
A safe pick, perhaps even a popular pick, but I don't think the Cowboys take a guard that high even if the right side of the Cowboys' line may have been one of the worst in the NFL. |
Charles Davis | Eric Reid, S, LSU |
No comments from Davis | TE Tyler Eifert, OT Lane Johnson, DE Sam Montgomery, WR Keenan Allen, WR Justin Hunter |
The Cowboys need good safeties for Kiffin's defense, but Kiffin's pass defense begins up front. |
