Digging Deep: Six New Cowboys Players You May Have Never Heard Of

Dave already put up a quick post announcing the addition of the new players to the reserve/future list, and while you may have heard of WR Anthony Armstrong, TE Colin Cochart and Long Snapper Charley Hughlett, you probably haven't heard a lot about the other six players signed on Monday. Yet for all we know, one of those six new players might continue the Cowboys' tradition of bringing along project players from relative obscurity to NFL stardom. So here, by way of introduction, are six short profiles of the newest Dallas Cowboys:

WR Jared Green, Southern, 6’1", 191, 23 years old.

Jared Green is the son of Darrell Green, the former Washington Redskins cornerback and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It seems he's picked up some of his pop's speed after reportedly running a 4.33 in the forty in his pro day, and the National Football Post called him a "plus" vertical threat. He spent the 2012 season on the Panthers practice squad.

LB Cameron Sheffield, Troy, 6’2", 257, 24 years old.

Sheffield was drafted by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2010 draft. A neck injury sustained in the 2010 preseason, where Sheffield suffered a helmet collision with Mike Bell from the Eagles, kept him out for the year and almost ended his NFL career. But Sheffield came back in 2011 to make the roster and play in all 16 games. He started one game for the Chiefs and had 9 tackles on the season, but was released at the start of the 2012 season

S/CB Brandon Underwood, Cincinnati, 6’1", 197, 26 years old

Underwood was a sixth-round pick for the Packers in 2009 and was a top candidate to take over as the nickel back in 2010 before injuries derailed him. He recorded 21 tackles in 23 games over his two seasons with the Packers, 16 of which came on special teams. Underwood was released prior to the start of the 2011 regular season after some legal issues and did not sign with another club until new Raider GM Reggie McKenzie, who knew him from their time together in Green Bay and signed him in February 2012, but Underwood was waived/injured in September 2012 with a hip/groin injury. Underwood also comes with some major character concerns.

WR Carlton Mitchell, South Florida, 6’4", 212, 24 years old

Mitchell was drafted by the Browns in the sixth round of the 2010 draft. He played 52 snaps over 16 games with the Browns in two seasons, catching only three passes for 32 yards as injuries and ineffectiveness kept him off the field and on the practice squad. After two unproductive seasons and after struggling with a leg injury in camp, he was released by the Browns in late August 2012. He was signed and released by the Jaguars in a three-day span in November 2012.

OG/OT Ray Dominguez, Arkansas, 6’4", 329, 24 years old

Dominguez was a highly recruited UDFA offensive tackle in 2011. His agent said 17 or 18 teams made offers, and he seriously considered offers from the Cowboys and Jets before ultimately signing with the Packers, where he was moved inside to guard. The Packers elevated him to the 53-man roster after five weeks on the practice squad but he never played a snap in the NFL. He was injured-released during final cuts after he suffered an ankle injury in the 2012 camp and picked up later in the season by the Panthers. Dominguez needs to improve both his speed (5.48-40, 1.88-10) and power (21 bench reps) to make it in the league.

OT Aderious Simmons, Arizona State, 6’7", 310 pounds, 26 years old.

Simmons spent camp with the Saints in 2012 but didn’t make the roster. Simmons did not play high school football, and after stints at Junior colleges in California transferred to Arizona State in 2010 and appeared in 13 games with nine starts in two seasons for the Sun Devils.
