For the second straight year, the Cowboys will use their franchise tag on Anthony Spencer. Spencer's agent Jordan Woy has tweeted the news.
Dallas Cowboys will franchise tag Anthony Spencer for 2nd year in a row. We will work on long term deal.
— Jordan Woy (@JordanWoy) March 4, 2013
This is backed up by several other sources. Spencer broke out last year and became the Cowboys most consistent defensive player throughout the 2012 campaign. Dallas is moving from the 3-4 to the 4-3, meaning Spencer will put his hand on the ground and will line up at the strong side defensive end spot opposite DeMarcuse Ware. Woy, Spencer's agent, indicates they will try to work on a long term deal that might soften the hit the Cowboys will take on the 2013 salary cap by using the franchise tag.
I didn't think Dallas would have the money to spend on keeping Spencer, but with all the recent restructuring of contracts, Stephen Jones found a way.
