On The Chalkboard: The Stick Concept (Video)

As we prepare for the 2013 NFL Season, let's go back to the Chalkboard to look at a popular route combination used to attack Cover 3, a coverage we will see very regularly from the Dallas Cowboys under Monte Kiffin.

A Few Points To Remember:

  • This is a 3 man, 1/2 field route combination used as part of the quick (3 Step) passing game. It can be used in 2x2, 3x1 or 3x2(empty) formations.
  • This is the type of play that offenses use to gain efficient yards when they are having trouble running the ball. It's a very easy, safe throw for the QB, with such a short drop that pressure becomes a non-issue.
  • This concept uses a "triangle stretch" to test the defense. The horizontal stretch from the Stick and the Flat route stresses the Curl-Flat defender in Cover 3. While the Go route creates a vertical stress on the outside deep third of the CB.
  • Many times the "tosser" (double slant) combination will be used backside to provide options in the event the defense plays man coverage.
