Cowboys Make Roster Moves: The Danny Coale Era Is Over

New, comments

Dallas has begun making moves to improve the team, and one of them ends a sad story.

After working out a group of six players, including three cornerbacks, the Dallas Cowboys made some moves, but have not addressed the cornerback issue yet.

Instead the Cowboys released DT Landon Cohen and signed David Carter to take his place. In Carter, the team appears to be getting a more experienced player.

Dallas bid farewell to Landon Cohen, who signed with the Cowboys in July and played 38 snaps in two games, recording one tackle. They replaced him with David Carter, who appeared in 32 games for Arizona the last two seasons and was released by the Cardinals last month.

It is likely that the Cowboys will make at least one more move to acquire a new cornerback. Morris Claiborne has been playing hurt and is ranked 92 out of 94 NFL cornerbacks by Pro Football Focus. Just by way of contrast, Brandon Carr is ranked 11 and Orlando Scandrick is tied for 30 on the PFF list. The team may feel it needs some help, at least in the short term. It would still have to figure out what to do to clear a spot.

There also was a change on the practice squad. The Cowboys signed Jamar Newsome, a wide receiver who has seen limited action over the past two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Kansas City Chiefs. He replaces Danny Coale, who was released.

For those who have been reading Blogging The Boys for the past couple of years, it is probably no surprise that writing the previous sentence was rather painful. After the 2012 draft, I picked Coale as my pet cat. He almost immediately went down with injury, and what looked to be a promising NFL career just gradually deteriorated. It was the beginning of the Legend of the Goatmouth (an old Jamaican curse I inadvertently put on him, according to some), and the reason I am expressly forbidden from ever having a pet cat again. Now, Coale's journey with the Cowboys is over.

But not the weight of my guilt.
