Dallas Cowboys News & Notes: Should Cowboys Draft A QB?

Valentine's Day links.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Jerry’s mantra of change should include drafting QB | Mac Engel, Star-Telegram
Engel notes that the Cowboys have drafted only five QBs under Jerry Jones, and that while drafting Troy Aikman likely spoiled Jones, drafting Quincy Carter may have scared him off drafting QBs altogether. Yet Engel offers up an intriguing scenario for the Cowboys:

Jerry just does not want any part of the process of developing a young quarterback. What he may not want to acknowledge is that, since he bought the team, the learning curve for QBs is much different today than it was in 1989. The rules are more QB-friendly. Phil Simms noted last year that between coaching, rule changes, short passes and quick reads, the game is much easier now for quarterbacks of this generation.

There is no reason not to take advantage of that, and possibly draft LSU’s Zach Mettenberger or Georgia’s Aaron Murray. Both suffered torn ACLs late in the 2013 season, which will do nothing but hurt their draft stock. Both played multiple seasons of major college ball. Both have pro qualities. There is something there. Neither would need to play immediately.

What we learned about roster construction of the NFC - NFL.com
Chris Wesseling looks at how the 16 NFC teams constructed their rosters, and in two sentences delivers an interesting take that runs counter to at least two, and maybe more, popular Cowboys memes.

Jerry Jones' squad is viewed as a deep-pocketed one reliant on big free agency splashes. On the contrary, this roster was built through the draft's first three rounds, bolstered by a few players who fell through the draft cracks such as Tony Romo, Miles Austin and Barry Church.

Dallas Cowboys' DeMarcus Ware more motivated than ever - Todd Archer, ESPN
Ware remains confident he’ll return to form in 2014, and expects the bandwagon to fill up quickly once he does.

"I want to be quiet," Ware said. "I just want to let my actions speak for themself. But I do chuckle a little bit because I know there’s a tornado coming."

"People are going to doubt you regardless. Let’s say you had a 20-sack season, it’s ‘Can he do it again?’ One year you had 19 sacks. Can you do it again? One year you had 15 sacks. Can you do it again? It’s going to be that every year. I’m going to be healthy. I’m going to shut my mouth and be quiet and let my work on the field characterize who I am. I’m not going to sit here and talk about what I’m going to do. I’m going behind the scenes and do what I need to do and get the job done, and at the end of the day there’s going to be a bandwagon everybody needs to jump back on."

DeMarcus Ware wants to practice more too - Todd Archer, ESPN Dallas
Jason Garrett said earlier this year that DeMarcus Ware needs to practice more to be effective on gameday, and Ware agrees.

"I feel when I practice more or just practice in general I do play better," Ware said. "When you’re out there, you do your reps, you’ve seen it, but there’s nothing like simulating going against full speed."

Cowboys add two coaches, make Keith O'Quinn to assistant special teams coach - Clarence Hill, Star-Telegram
Keith O'Quinn, previously the offensive quality control as well assistant wide receivers coach moves into the assistant special teams position vacated by Chris Boniol. Kyle Valero, who worked with Scott Linehan for four seasons in Detroit, joins the Cowboys as an offensive assistant. Turner West (26) also joins as an assistant coach. He spent last season as a graduate assistant coach at Middle Tennessee.

All-Under-25 Team: Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick among rising stars - NFL.com
Elliot Harrison forms a team of rising stars, including Smith and Frederick for the Cowboys.

Witten, Carr Climbing List Of League’s Ironmen - Rowan Kavner, DallasCowboys.com
Kavner pulls together some surprising trivia:

Brandon Carr leads all cornerbacks by 30 on the most consecutive regular season games started list with 96, while Jason Witten leads all tight ends by more than 50 on the most consecutive regular season games played list with 171.

Doug Free’s the only other Cowboys player within the top five at his respective position in terms of longevity. Free’s played in 80 straight games and made 71 consecutive starts, ranking fifth in the league in both categories.

Why didn’t Cowboys give Bill Callahan a chance to leave? Blame Rob Ryan | David Moore, DMN
Jerry haters will love this: Moore argues that the Cowboys didn't let Callahan leave because, get this, they didn't want him to be successful with another team. There is no indication anywhere in the article that this is anything but Moore's personal opinion.

NFL labor agreement cited as a trigger for exodus from college - Tom Orsborn, Express-News
Despite a labor agreement that includes a rookie wage scale, a record number of underclassmen are declaring for the draft. Why? Because early entry allows players to accelerate the process that leads to lucrative, long-term deals, writes Orsborn in an article you'll find worth your time.
