Dallas Cowboys News & Notes: Tony Romo Making "Excellent Progress"

Latest Dallas Cowboys headlines: Tony Romo will be moving to low impact exercises soon as he continues to recover from his surgery; the Cowboys haven't gotten a great return on their investments on defense; the Cowboys injury situation continues to baffle

Cowboys QB Tony Romo poised to move into next stage of rehabilitation | David Moore, DMN
Moore writes that Romo has made excellent progress in his rehab to date, which has consisted largely of basic core and stabilization exercises.

Romo is said to be feeling good and doing well with the exercises, particularly over the last four weeks.

There is no definitive timetable, but he will likely be cleared in the next week or two to move to the next phase, which includes some low impact work.

Dallas has committed to D with little payoff - Todd Archer, ESPN Dallas
Archer runs down the investments the Cowboys have made in the defense, both in draft picks and free agency, and concludes that while the defense has been a priority over the last few years, the Cowboys just haven't gotten a good return on their investments.

Cowboys DE DeMarcus Ware has no surgery scheduled — for now | David Moore, DMN
Moore is burning the midnight oil (at least in my time zone) with his second late article of the day in which he writes that Ware is not planning any surgery on his elbow, opting instead to let it improve with rest. For now.

Ware will have the elbow examined again later this month and a determination will be made at that time how to proceed.

Five players who need to stay healthy - Calvin Watkins, ESPN Dallas
I think Watkins initially wanted to do a list of 53 players who need to stay healthy for the Cowboys, but ran out of steam after five very predictable names.

If you're like me, and expect an article to answer the question asked in the headline, then you're in for a big disappointment here.

Which Happens First: Cowboys in a Super Bowl or a Super Bowl Back in DFW? | Richie Whitt, NBC 5 DFW
Good question. There won't be another Super Bowl at AT&T Stadium until 2019, at the earliest.

Roster Rundown: Knee Injury Cut Dunbar’s Season Short - Bryan Broaddus, DallasCowboys.com
Broaddus expects new play caller Scott Linehan to create a lot more opportunities for the criminally under-utilized Dunbar.

I recall a day of visiting with Jason Witten discussing how we both thought that Dunbar would have 50 catches in this offense but those 50 catches only tuned [sic] into seven. I do understand the concerns that the staff had about him fumbling the ball but he was the only running back on this roster that was able to come up with the explosive play. [...] It just bothered me that you have a weapon with his ability and he is just playing on special teams.

Troy Aikman on Jerry Jones' ownership: 'Unusual' that the Cowboys don't have a philosophy | DMN
Aikman outlines what in his mind makes a team philosophy.

"I think with winning organizations there are processes that are in place and there is a way to do things, a philosophy, a belief that you have and everything is built around that,'' Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman said. "If you take Seattle for instance, if you say 'hey, what is their philosophy,' you kind of know what that is. They're going to play great defense, they're going to run the football and they draft players who fit the mold of what they're looking for. I don't know that the Cowboys…

Seriously, if Aikman thinks playing defense, running the ball and drafting the players you want is a great philosophy, then this next article makes absolutely zero sense.

Roger Staubach: I’d love to see Troy Aikman working in Cowboys’ front office; ‘He could be another John Elway’ | Jon Machota, DMN
Staubach endorses Aikman for a role with the Cowboys.

"It would depend on Stephen [Jones] and Jerry [Jones] sitting down with Troy and figuring out how Troy could contribute in a significant way," Staubach said. "I think it’s a good idea. There might be a formula there somewhere. I’m a big Aikman guy so I think whatever he’s going to do, he’s going to do well."

"He could be another John Elway, as far as a general manager. Elway’s done a great job in Denver, so I think if they could figure out a way that would work with the family situation I would love to see Troy involved with the Cowboys."

I guess I'm cool with this, as long as they don't ask Aikman to define a philosophy for the Cowboys.
