Henry Melton spent the whole day yesterday talking to the Cowboys at Valley Ranch, and even had dinner with his former coach Rod Marinelli in Dallas last night.
But as of this morning, he is continuing his free agency road trip. After stops in Minnesota, Seattle and Dallas, he is now headed to St. Louis for a visit with the Rams.
Hopes were high among Cowboys fans that Jerry Jones would not let Melton leave without signing a contract, but those hopes were dashed this morning. However, the Cowboys remain in the hunt for Melton, just like every other team on his travel agenda. Quoting a source, Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News writes that contract talks are still ongoing this morning between Melton's camp and the Cowboys, as they are with other teams he has yet to visit.
Melton is the top defensive tackle remaining on the market, despite the fact that he tore his ACL last season playing on a franchise tag in Chicago. And at 27 years of age, Melton is probably looking to hit the jackpot with a big contract in free agency, while the teams he's talking to are probably looking to sign him at a discount contract that could allow him to rehabilitate his value this season while his knee slowly returns to full strength.
It's a process, at the end of which somebody will ultimately blink.
For now, the Cowboys turn their attention to free agent defensive end Jared Allen, who's visiting Valley Ranch today after wining and dining with some of the Cowboys coaching staff last night. But lines of communication remain open to Melton.
