Last week, Blogging The Boys was asked to make their pick in the annual SB Nation mock draft. When the time came to pick, many of the early favorites were off the board. The Steelers broke the hearts of the front-page writers when they selected Aaron Donald one pick ahead of the Cowboys. That pick brought on a lot of commentary about Donald fitting in a 3-4 scheme. Other favorites were also taken; both safeties (HaHa Clinton-Dix and Calvin Pryor) and Anthony Barr were not available. So when it came down to the Cowboys pick, the front-page writers were divided. Three voted for defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan (Dave, OCC, Dawn), wanting to give some added pop to the defensive line. Four wanted offensive tackle/guard Zack Martin (Rabble, Joey, KD, Tom), a guy with versatility and the ability to step in and start this year. Here's how I termed our dilemma:
"Nightmare scenario for Dallas with Anthony Barr, Aaron Donald and the two safeties off the board. Ideally the team would trade down, but stuck at No. 16, the BTB front-page writing staff voted 4-to-3 to take Martin over Timmy Jernigan. Martin will help the Cowboys complete the overhaul of their offensive line. Martin could battle Doug Free for the right tackle spot, or kick inside to guard where many experts predict he’ll end up. With Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick and Martin in the fold, a young Cowboys line is shaping up nicely. The Cowboys feel confident they can get defensive line help in subsequent rounds with the depth of this draft."
So BTB, did we do the right thing? Should we have taken Jernigan? Or maybe there was someone else still on the board you would rather have seen wearing the star.
