Anthony Spencer, Ron Leary Will Start Training Camp On The PUP List

One was expected, the other is a mild surprise.

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

For a while now we have expected that when the Dallas Cowboys actually started practicing at training camp for 2014, defensive end Anthony Spencer would not practice but be placed on the PUP list. That is exactly what has happened as reported by Brandon George of the DMN. This comes as no shock, it's been expected that Spencer was going to need more time to recover from his microfracture surgery, if he recovers at all. Estimates vary, but many pundits feel it will be sometime into the early part of the season that Spencer could reasonably return to activity. If he is put on the reserves/PUP list at the beginning of the year, then he would have to wait until week six at the earliest.

Ron Leary being on the PUP list is a mild surprise although from the way he was talked about in the press conference yesterday this seemed like a possibility. Leary is suffering from a dreaded hamstring problem. Leary is facing strong competition for his left guard position from Mackenzy Bernadeau and Uche Nwaneri. Any significant time he misses is not going to help his cause.

The first practice begins today!
