Five Matchups To Watch In Dallas Cowboys Opener Vs San Francisco 49ers

Which matchups will be the key to the game?

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Football is largely considered to be the "Ultimate Team Game", requiring 11 men to operate in near perfect unison in order to achieve success. However, oftentimes there are individual matchups within the game that can go a long way towards determining the outcome of the contest. Which match ups in the Cowboys season opener against the 49ers fit the bill?

Cowboys 49ers Comments
1 RG - Ron Leary DE - Justin Smith Smith is an absolute beast, both as a 5 tech and inside as a nickel rusher. Ron Leary will need to pack his big boy pads for this game, and his ability to limit Smith's impact on the game will have a big say in the final result.
2 S - JJ Wilcox/ Barry Church TE - Vernon Davis Vernon Davis is the 49ers' best weapon in the passing game, and how the Dallas safeties are able to match up with him down the field could be the difference maker for the Cowboys defense.
3 RT - Doug Free OLB - Ahmad Brooks With rush mate Aldon Smith suspended, Ahmad Brooks is the best pass rusher the 49ers have to offer. Does good Doug Free show up to handle this assignment?
4 CB - Sterling Moore WR - Anquan Bolden Molly caught Orlando Scandrick, forcing Sterling Moore into the slot corner role for the first few weeks of the year. Anquan Boldin is a guy that SF has used often in the slot, and his physical style will present a major challenge for Moore.
5 DT - Henry Melton RG - Mike Iupati Iupati has struggled some through the pre-season, and Henry Melton hasn't played at all. If Melton gets the best of this matchup, the Cowboys will have an interior rush presence they desperately need.

If the Cowboys are able to come out on top in the majority of these battles, they will give themselves a great shot to open the season with a win.
