Bob Sturm: Cowboys "have too many good players." | Dallas Morning News
In a recent chat, Sturm wrote about his overall impression of the team:
First and foremost, this is a confident group. They know they are one of the teams to beat, but are still hungry to prove their quality. I think it is great that there are teams in the NFC who they are shooting for, namely the Seattle Seahawks who have run the NFC for a while now. The Cowboys are good, but they still realize they need to go up another level to get where they wish to go. They also are a deep group and are eager to challenge each other for spots.
I love the fact that the 53 man looks stronger than usual and that there are so many fine players that cut downs are actually difficult. I feel that a few cuts will be picked up elsewhere and that isn’t normally a Cowboys issue. They actually have too many good players. There are some positions of concern, but this camp has been solid. If they can make it a bit longer without any catastrophic injuries, then the August mission will have been accomplished.
Peter King: Tony Romo quarterbacks Cowboys in very 'Staubach-ian' way | Dallas Morning News
King joined Shan & R.J. on 105.3 The Fan earlier this week and discussed the Cowboys season outlook, his best Jerry Jones story, the transition of power from Jerry to Stephen, and his take on Tony Romo:
"I’ve always liked him. It’s amazing he’s 35 years old. I’m blown away by it. That’s what happens a lot of times when you cover guys over the years. Jason Witten to me seems like he’s 47 years old. Tony Romo seems like he’s 27. I don’t know. It’s good to see him. He’s just a good person who’s handled being the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys to me in a very Staubach-ian way, a very cool way."
Dallas Cowboys' Kyle Wilber adds another notch to position belt - Todd Archer, ESPN
Wilberforce has added middle linebacker to his resume of positions.
The Cowboys want to keep Sean Lee at weakside linebacker at whatever cost, so they need to find depth with Hitchens out with a sore foot and Jasper Brinkley a two-down inside linebacker.
"I just think it shows the kind of football player he is," coach Jason Garrett said. "He's not one of those guys that wows you. He's not one of those guys that jumps through the roof and runs a great 40 and all those different kinds of things, but he's a guy who shows up really each and every day. He's been an excellent special teams player for us, a lot of versatility, just a good player."
Cowboys rookies making sudden impact | Clarence Hill, The Star Telegram
Hill writes that in addition to the Cowboys' "talented threesome" of Byron Jones, Randy Gregory, and La'el Collins, as many as seven rookies could play huge roles this season. He proceeds to list all of those rookies, including a guy called "Byron Smith," and an interesting observation about tight end Geoff Swaim.
Swaim is the reason the Cowboys plan to keep four tight ends on the roster and go short at another position. They drafted him because of his ability as an in-line blocker. They have been pleasantly surprised about the promise he has shown as a receiver, a skill he didn’t get to use much as Texas because of the poor quarterback play.
With chances dwindling, Dallas Cowboys youngsters need to impress - Dallas Cowboys Blog - ESPN
The Cowboys have tomorrow's game, three more practices in Oxnard, and the game against the game against the Vikings in Dallas next week before they have to cut their roster to 75 players, and a week later they have to further cut the roster to 53. As the season nears, the chance for young Dallas players to make favorable impressions in their bid to make a 53-man roster are dwindling.
George: Lots of candidates for Cowboys' 4th and 5th receiver spots; who are best bets? | Dallas Morning News
George has Devin Street as a lock for the fourth WR spot, with Whitehead as the fifth guy thanks in part to his return ability - as long as he doesn't fumble anymore. Next up are Nick Harwell and David Porter.
Harwell gives the Cowboys some versatility because he can play either inside or outside receiver. Dooley said the Cowboys prefer him inside. The club views Harwell, who has also been used some on the kickoff and punt return units, as more of a practice squad candidate at this point, but he still has time to make up ground.
Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne ready to return, but will he have to wait another week? | David Moore, Dallas Morning News
Claiborne feels like he's ready to play, but the team may determine to push his return back by one week, purely as a precaution.

49ers obtain latest Levi's Stadium field from Arizona desert | CSN Bay Area
On Sunday, show of your Cowboys nerd-dom with this bit of trivia: The 49ers have gone with a new vendor to get Levi's Stadium's field ready for their exhibition game against the Cowboys on Sunday.
Regardless of the effectiveness of the new grass, it is destined for a brief stay at Levi’s Stadium. The flooring for country-music star Luke Bryan’s concert is scheduled to be installed on Monday. After the concert next Saturday, the 49ers will begin installing a new surface for the beginning of the regular season. There are no other concerts scheduled for Levi's Stadium through Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7.
