The Dallas Cowboys have made the first roster cuts to get down to the 75 man roster limit that they have to meet Tuesday (September 1st). There are not any real surprises in the first five names to be announced as the team is paring away players who had little to no chance of making the 53 man roster
Cowboys start process of cut to 75: WR Phil Bates, P Tom Hornsey, CB Robert Steeples, LS Casey Kreiter, DT Carliff Taylor.— Todd Archer (@toddarcher) August 31, 2015
Hornsey and Kreiter probably knew from the beginning that they had no real chance to make the team as specialists. With a Pro Bowl long snapper in LP Ladouceur and Chris Jones not only punting well but being Dan Bailey's holder for placekicks, they were brought into camp strictly to take some reps to reduce the workload on the entrenched starters. Bates and Taylor were the two most recent additions to the team. This gave them no real chance to make an impression and they were probably always destined to be nothing more than placeholders as injuries reduced the available players on the roster.
Steeples was with the team since late in the 2014 season, but the depth at cornerback was working against him, and it has to be assumed others showed more to date so that the team wanted to take one more look at them in the final preseason game Thursday against the Houston Texans.
The list of cuts will be updated here as they are announced.
