Cowboys Training Camp 2015: Injuries Taking Toll On Running Back Depth

Injuries have been light so far, but two running backs are missing time.

The Dallas Cowboys were hoping that competition in training camp at the running back position would finally solve the issue of who would be the main guys toting the rock. Up to this point, they haven't had a full competition. On the eve of camp they had to release Ryan Williams because his knee injuries were just not going to allow him to reach his potential. Once the team got to Oxnard, Darren McFadden was unable to practice because of hamstring issues. Now, we can add Lance Dunbar to the list of walking wounded.

Lance Dunbar came up limping after taking a rep in full-team drills during Wednesday’s afternoon practice, and he left the field with team trainers after having his right ankle looked at. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said he doesn’t think the injury is serious, but he added that it’s too early to say for sure.

"I think that was an awkward tackle or hit that was made on him, and I think he just tweaked something," Jones said. "We don't really think it's a serious issue at this point."

With Dunbar hurt and McFadden already out, the Cowboys were down to Joseph Randle and a couple of guys, Lache Seastrunk and Gus Johnson, who aren't likely to be around once the season starts. If Dunbar is going to miss any length of time, the Cowboys will need to add another back just for the purposes of taking reps in camp. There is good news though, reports are that McFadden is progressing enough that he may be back at practice by the weekend.

In other injury updates:

Defensive tackles Chris Whaley and Terrell McClain both left practice – Whaley with a sore knee, and McClain with a bone bruise and a hamstring problem. Devin Street rolled his ankle on the final play of practice – an impressive touchdown catch – but he said afterward it wasn’t an issue.

Guys who have been out for a while are Rolando McClain, Chaz Green, and Mark Nzeocha.
