It has been on busy day for the Dallas Cowboys. Following putting Tony Romo on IR/DTR and Terrell McClain on IR, the team has, according to multiple sources, made two moves to solidify the backup quarterback position behind Brandon Weeden. Kellen Moore was promoted from the practice squad, and the team is making a trade with the Buffalo Bills to get their number two quarterback, Matt Cassel.
The Cowboys are giving up a 2017 fifth-round pick in exchange for Buffalo Bills backup QB Matt Cassel and Bills' 2017 7th-round pick.

Cassel was the number two quarterback for the Bills, which makes the move a bit surprising, but he was apparently considered disposable, given the relatively low price. The Cowboys had about $7.7 million in cap space before the trade which allowed them to absorb the cost.
Cowboys assume Cassel's one-year deal for $2.15M plus incentives. Current starter Brandon Weeden making $660,000 in 2nd year of 2-year deal.

The team may also restructure the contract to get back some space, but they do not have to. Since they elected to go with Cassel over the quarterbacks brought in for workouts, it must be assumed none of those candidates impressed.
Since Cassel will take some time to get up to speed, Moore will serve as a bridge backup. He will likely be waived and hopefully returned to the practice squad when Cassel is deemed ready to go. Cassel may also be seen as a possible replacement for Weeden, whose contract is up at the end of the year. This way, the team will be able to take a very long look at both the veterans to see if one is a good choice going forward.
Although it was several years ago, Cassel was successful filling in for an injured Tom Brady with the Patriots. The Cowboys seem to be betting on his ability to work with a solid offensive system and supporting cast.
