The Dallas Cowboys took a risk on Randy Gregory when he fell deep into the second round in the 2015 draft because of drug issues. It looks like that risk isn’t going to pay off anytime soon, if ever. Reports are out today that Gregory missed a drug test, which is essentially the same as failing one, and that could lead to another year-long suspension.
[UPDATE] There are now reports that he actually failed a test for marijuana in the past week. So unclear if he failed a test or missed a test at this moment. Same result for either, though.
The Cowboys had hoped to get Gregory back at the end of this season. He has been around the facility working out and attending meetings. If he could have stayed out of trouble, he could have played in the last games and the playoffs assuming the Cowboys make it that far. Now, his career as a Cowboy could be in jeopardy.
The Cowboys went big-risk/big-reward when they drafted Gregory, who has unreal athleticism and talent to be a premier defensive end. But with so many failed drug tests, when he knows his career could be in jeopardy, leads one to believe he may never conquer the issue. He could become the next in a long line of failed second-round draft choices for the Cowboys. Ultimately, the Cowboys may have to go back to the well and draft some more defensive ends in 2017.
