In our first mock draft database of the season, published the day before the Senior Bowl on January 29, we took a look at 30 different mock drafts by some of the better-known draftniks on the interwebs. At that point just a week ago, 27 of the 30 mocks were projecting the Cowboys to take a defensive player and only one mock drafter, Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com, had the Cowboys picking quarterback Carson Wentz out of North Dakota State.
Today's edition of our mock draft database features 37 different mocks, 20 of which were published since January 29, and eight of those 20 mocks have the Cowboys taking Carson Wentz
Bryan Perez of Draftbreakdown.com explains why Wentz to Dallas makes perfect sense, even if very few draftniks even considered that a possibility just a week ago.
Even I’m shocked by how high I have Wentz going, but this pick just seems perfect from every angle.
First, the Cowboys have to actively assemble their post-Romo plan. We saw just how much Dallas relies on him — and is not prepared for life without him — after his collarbone injury kept him out for an extended period of time last year. Second, Carson Wentz looks the part on tape and answered questions at the Senior Bowl about his ability to perform against better competition. Finally, he was coached by the Cowboys in Mobile.
Assuming he impressed them as much as he did the masses, there’s no reason that they shouldn’t take him here. He won’t make it to the second round and it will probably cost Dallas way too much to try and trade back into the first round for him. Wentz will be able to sit behind Romo for a couple of seasons, sharpen his tools, and lead the Cowboys for a long, long time.
The table below lists the 37 mocks by their publication date and shows which player is mocked to the Cowboys. For your convenience, the table is sortable.

It looks like there are three, perhaps four consensus picks emerging for the Cowboys, as it should be if you are picking this high in the draft. When you're picking No. 4 overall, there shouldn't be more than a half dozen or so names under serious consideration, as those will be the half dozen best players in this draft class. Two of those players, OT Laremy Tunsil and QB Jared Goff, are being consistently picked ahead of the Cowboys. That currently leaves a quartet of players to choose from, at least according to the assembled draftniks above: Myles Jack, Carson Wentz, Joey Bosa, and Jalen Ramsey.
Which one of the four would be your choice?
