It's taken a while, but the Dallas Cowboys finally made a move to sign a free agent from outside of the organization. The team agreed to a four-year deal with defensive tackle Cedric Thornton.
The Cowboys have desperately needed help along the defensive line, and the fanbase has been asking for an upgrade at the 1-tech position. Nick Hayden has basically been a placeholder, but Cedric Thornton is a player. He is 27 years old and has been in the Philadelphia Eagles line rotation for three years with 45 starts. I asked our own Joey Ickes for a quick evaluation.
At 6' 4", 309 lbs. Thornton played the 5-technique defensive end position in the Eagles 3-4 defense the last few years. As the unheralded member of that defensive line next to Benny Logan and Fletcher Cox, Thornton often did the dirty work allowing the Eagles other rushers to succeed. He will move inside to the 1-technique position in the Cowboys defense, and his ability to hold up blockers, while making a few athletic plays, will provide an upgrade over Nick Hayden at that spot.
