Cowboys 2016 Free Agency Day One Recap: Who They Signed, Who They Lost, Players Of Interest

New, comments

It was a busy day league-wide, but the Cowboys have made few moves.

The Dallas Cowboys new-found discipline in free agency continues in 2016. Over the past few years, the Cowboys have shied away from the big-name splashes on the first day of free agency, instead choosing to wait for the bargains that come later. They join teams like the Green Bay Packers, the New England Patriots, the Seattle Seahawks among others who are sitting out the big spending.

Conversely, the Cowboys NFC East rivals, the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles went on spending sprees - the Giants trying to rebuild their defense, the Eagles trying to quickly rid themselves of the Chip Kelly era.

Let's cover were the Cowboys are at the moment.

They signed starting linebacker Rolando McClain to a one-year, $5 million deal. This was a low-risk smart move. McClain can be a force when engaged and not suspended. If the Cowboys can get his best in 2016, it's a great move. They have also tendered restricted free agent Ron Leary at a second-round level and Jeff Heath at the lowest level. Dallas did lose one free agent, Matt Cassel signed with the Tennessee Titans.

If the Cowboys are interested in keeping Lance Dunbar, they will have competition. Dunbar is scheduled to visit the San Francisco 49ers. Outside of that, we haven't heard much when it comes to Cowboys free agents.

Prior to the start of free agency, plenty of names were discussed in conjunction with the Cowboys. As of now, there have only been two confirmed visits that are going to happen tomorrow. Eagles defensive lineman Cedric Thornton and Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore. Most Cowboys fans are familiar with Moore since he started his career in Dallas, but was quickly released. He has spent time with the Panthers and the Dolphins, amassing a 13-12 record as a starter.

The Cowboys have also been rumored to have interest in former Rams defensive end Chris Long, Jets RB Bilal Powell and Falcons LB O'Brien Schofield.

There were plenty of guys discussed/rumored/hoped-for by the Dallas fanbase , but many of those have already signed elsewhere. There are a lot of talented guys still available, the Cowboys will be waiting for the prices to come down. Among the top free agents still on the board include:

CB Sean Smith
S Eric Weddle
RT Andre Smith
DE Robert Ayers
S Reggie Nelson
LB Courtney Upshaw
WR Mohamed Sanu
DT Nick Fairly
CB Prince Amukamara
CB Casey Hayward
RB Alfred Morris
CB Brent Grimes

There are many more available, you can see the whole list here.
