Thanks to their loss on Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys are eliminated from playoff contention. They have one game left remaining in Philadelphia this week, and they could be playing it with 2018 in mind.
It makes sense to see what certain players have, get a look as early as possible so to speak. This process has begun, and linebacker Justin Durant is the first casualty.
Cowboys have released veteran LB Justin Durant. Club will sign Tre’Von Johnson off practice squad to take his place for final game.

Tre’Von Johnson will fill the void left by Justin Durant, looking to see what he can bring to Matt Eberflus’ linebacker corps next season. Dallas will obviously have Sean Lee and Jaylon Smith to work with, but with the status of Anthony Hitchens and free agency up in the air, looking under every rock is encouraged.
It was just two seasons ago that the Cowboys were in a similar boat to this one. In Week 17 against Washington they rested many players and gave ones like Jameill Showers a shot to see what they can do.
We don’t know exactly how Jason Garrett and his staff will handle the entirety of Sunday’s game, but the writing on the wall due to Durant’s release and Johnson’s promotion seems to suggest that they’re all-in on this as a preseason sort of game.
