Cowboys Pre-Draft Visits: Pass Rushers & Cornerbacks Dominate Early Scheduled Vistors

The list of pre-draft visitors is usually a good indicator of what the Cowboys will do in the draft.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

If you've been trying to keep up with all the players the Cowboys have met with since the Senior Bowl, have had private workouts with, or have checked out at various pro days around the nation, you're probably pretty dizzy right now.

Yesterday news reached us that three Cowboys representative attended the pro day at Texas A&M; Walter Football keeps a list of players the Cowboys have met with since January that's already 33 names long; our friend KD Drummond at Cowboyswire keeps a running tally of all the players the Cowboys have had workouts with. But what does all that information mean?

In the Cowboys' hierarchy of pre-draft activities, meetings, workouts, interviews, and private workouts frankly don't mean all that much.

The holy grail of Cowboys pre-draft activity is the official pre-draft visit, as the list of names the Cowboys invite for pre-draft visits to Dallas is usually a good indicator of what the Cowboys will do in the draft. Which is why we've been faithfully tracking these visits since 2008 here on BTB, long before it became hip to track such things, and long before the Cowboys decided to clamp down on the information about pre-draft visitors.

But just because the Cowboys don't want the news to leak out doesn't mean it won't. Here's the early list of players we know of so far, a list dominated by pass rushers and cornerbacks.

Cowboys Pre-draft Visitors per 4/1/2017
CBS Rank Name POS College Proj. Rd Source
23 Taco Charlton DE Michigan 1 Mike Rothstein, ESPN
32 Charles Harris DE Missouri 1-2 Bobby Belt
34 Takkarist McKinley DE UCLA 1-2 Courtney Fallon, NFL
36 Cordrea Tankersley CB Clemson 1-2 Ian Rapoport, NFL
41 T.J. Watt DE Wisconsin 2 Jeremy Bergman, NFL
46 Kevin King CB Washington 2 Bobby Belt
63 Tarell Basham
DE Ohio 2 Bobby Belt
124 Tanoh Kpassagnon
DE Villanova 3-4 NFL Draft Insider
184 Shaquill Griffin CB Central Florida 5 Conor Orr, NFL
222 Treston Decoud CB Oregon State 7-FA Treston Decoud
243 Tedric Thompson SS Colorado 7-FA Bobby Belt

The visits will take place over the coming days, so we'll likely add more names to this list soon, and perhaps edit out some erroneous information. Once the "30-visits" are done, the Cowboys will host "Dallas Day" next Friday.

In addition to the 30 players the Cowboys bring in for pre-draft visits, they also bring in up to 50, and sometimes even more, draft-eligible local prospects who are usually less well known for a workout in Dallas. A player is considered a local prospect if he went to high school or college in the Dallas/Fort-Worth area. TCU, SMU and North Texas are the three colleges in the area from which the Cowboys are allowed to invite prospects.

BTB member Trent Schoneweis created a nifty map detailing the boundaries of the area from which prospects qualify for Dallas Day.

For now, we don't have a lot of names for that event yet, though from the few names we do have it looks like the area scout for Oklahoma has been particularly busy.

Dallas Day Visitors

840 Lenzy Pipkins CB Oklahoma State - - Dallas Day
872 Raheem Wilson CB Southeastern Oklahoma - - Dallas Day

Lots of things to ponder here. What are your early thoughts on these names?
