As the Dallas Cowboys are preparing for the 2017 season, they’re putting together what they hope is a squad worthy of Super Bowl LII. They’ve addressed needs, primarily on the defensive side of the ball via free agency and the draft... but maybe they need to add one more tool before they really get rolling. Dez Bryant is a fan of this idea, especially if it includes former New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis.
@Revis24 Dallas? ....I promise you are going to love what we got going on around here..your attitude fits our culture...waiting.....
— Dez Bryant (@DezBryant) June 10, 2017
Earlier this week we discussed here at BTB the prospect of adding former Jets MLB David Harris, but it’s his former New York teammate that Dez appears to have eyes for.
Many have speculated, debated, and/or proclaimed that Dallas should indeed be interested in acquiring Revis’ services, but it’s been a long time since he’s been the “Revis Island” his reputation was built on.
The last time said island was uninhabited, the way football fans prefer it, was easily the 2014 season when Revis played for the New England Patriots. He was one half of one of the better cornerback duos across the NFL that season which the Patriots rode to Super Bowl XLIX glory (the year that DEZ DEFINITELY CAUGHT IT).
That one-year mercenary-like deal followed up one of similar variety as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After those two seasons away, Revis returned home to the Jets on another big-time deal before ultimately being released this offseason.
It’s worth noting that Darrelle Revis has some off-the-field baggage to consider as well. He was arrested shortly after Super Bowl LI, an altercation in which Revis alleged he was assaulted. He has since been cleared by the NFL (even though Ezekiel Elliott hasn’t but hey facts or whatever) which means that he won’t miss any playing time in 2017.
While we’re on the subject, it’s worth noting that the man in Dallas that wears Revis’ iconic #24 - Nolan Carroll - may miss time in 2017. He was of course arrested on suspicion of a DWI recently, and if he does the Cowboys could be in a bind in the secondary.
Darrelle Revis is at a point in his NFL career where he might not necessarily be playing cornerback, but could make the switch that many older players do to safety. What do the Cowboys absolutely love? Position flex. This would give them three players in Revis, Byron Jones, and Chidobe Awuzie that are all capable of doing more than just one thing... which can be of serious use in a sport where many are often injured.
Perhaps Dez Bryant is thinking along these lines and is therefore recruiting Revis based on this logic. Two things that are particularly interesting about his tweet:
- It was unprompted. For those not on Twitter, this wasn’t a situation where Revis tweeted something, Dez saw it, thought “hey Revis is cool!”, and responded. It was completely organic.
- Dez said that Revis’ attitude fits the Cowboys culture. Call it whatever you want. Right kind of guy, Fight, Re-commit, etc. - Dez believes that Revis has that in him.
Dez has expressed a lot of confidence in the young guys the Cowboys have added to the secondary, but he knows what Revis can add on - and apparently off - the field. In two career matchups against the Jets and Revis, Dez Bryant has 7 catches for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns. Will they be teammates soon?
