I will not defend Jason Garrett any longer

It's been a rough start to a Cowboys' season that I had such high hopes for. After the first game, I felt like all my offseason writing was just wrong. The team isn't ready to contend, it appears. I still think there is opportunity for growth, on both sides of the ball. The defense is young and inexperienced, so they could get better. If David Irving ever returns, the pass rush and overall defense will improve. The offensive line has room for improvement as Connor Williams gains experience. And they still have Zeke.

But I'm writing here to add my name to the chorus of those who found Jason Garrett's decision to punt in overtime with 4th down and 1 to go inside the Texan's territory as among his worst in his long tenure as Dallas Cowboys' head coach.

In the offseason, I argued that Garrett's value to the team was as a roster builder, not an offensive guru. I also felt the team tended to play hard for him, even in defeat.

But that decision was HORRIBLE. It pulled the rug out from under the team, giving it the worst chance of winning the game. Going for it was the right decision. A long field goal try in an indoor stadium would have been the logical second choice. But punting?

I'm done. I'm sure they won't fire Garrett mid-season, but he should be gone, and with him Scott Linehan.

I don't know what other coaches might be out there, and yes, it's very possible to do worse than Garrett. But I no longer see any real hope of him leading the Cowboys.
