Report: Jason Garrett has tried to convince Jason Witten out of retirement to play for Cowboys

Tight end help, anyone?

Former Dallas Cowboys tight end has spent his first season off of the playing field working in the booth for Monday Night Football. His rookie season as an analyst has been met with mixed reviews, it’s his first year to be fair, and he hasn’t exactly found the form through the first 13 weeks that made him famous on the field.

Witten is obviously one of the best tight ends to ever play the game. He’ll someday go into the Cowboys Ring of Honor and Pro Football Hall of Fame, that paired with his job in television is a nice post-football life.

What if he came back to his football life, though? That seems to be what Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett prefers. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Garrett has indeed tried to lure Witten out of his current gig and back to the Dallas Cowboys locker room.

Dallas has struggled at the tight end position due to performance and injury, and Garrett was convinced that Witten could step right back in and become another asset on an offense that has come alive in recent weeks since the acquisition of wide receiver Amari Cooper.

Witten, however, ultimately is committed to the Monday Night Football booth and to his new craft as a broadcast analyst, according to sources.

The Cowboys have been without Geoff Swaim but even when he’s healthy he’s obviously not Jason Witten. It is indeed interesting to consider what Witten could do jumping in this late on the season.

A week and a half ago when the Cowboys were getting ready to host the New Orleans Saints on Thursday Night Football, 105.3 The Fan had been discussing a possible Witten return. Later that night Witten was seen on the field and sitting in a suite as the Cowboys defeated the Saints, but things cooled off after.

Would you want to see Witten return to the Cowboys? Do you think he could help?
