The New England Patriots didn’t punt a single time throughout Super Bowl LII. The New England Patriots lost Super Bowl LII. That’s amazing.
It took an amazing performance for this to be so, and that’s what the Philadelphia Eagles put forth on Sunday night. Philly officially has a Lombardi, and those my friends are tough cookies for us as Cowboys fans.
2017 has been tough with the Eagles all season long, honestly. While the Cowboys sputtered, Philadelphia prospered. Despite losing their franchise quarterback in Carson Wentz, they continued on their trek all the way to Super Bowl glory.
Just one season ago the Cowboys were looked at as the next team within the division to bathe in Lombardi’s confetti. With Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, the best offensive line in football... the sky was the limit. They’d undoubtedly get there first, we all thought.
This was obviously not the case. Philadelphia made roster moves that left many NFL fans skeptical at first, and looking back in awe now. Trades for players like Timmy Jernigan, Ronald Darby, and Jay Ajayi deepened their roster. Free agency acquisitions like Alshon Jeffery, Torrey Smith, and Patrick Robinson served as way-more-important than we initially thought.
At one point in Super Bowl LII Eagles head coach Doug Pederson ran a trick play that saw a touchdown thrown to quarterback Nick Foles. What’s even more astonishing than the play call itself is that it came on fourth down. Philadelphia wanted this Super Bowl, and they did everything that they could in order to achieve it.
The reality here is that not only does this new reality suck, but the Eagles are the toast of the NFC East. Their victory officially marks the NFC East as the first division in the NFL to have all of its teams win a Super Bowl, but given the state of the NFL today, they are the undisputed kings of it.
Last week we saw the Washington Redskins trade for Alex Smith, and while that’s a matter that still has to play itself out, the Redskins are at least looking to make their roster better. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen the Cowboys make a move like the Eagles of last offseason that had the capability to catapult them to the season’s final game.
Think about this, and think about it long and hard. The New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles, not to mention Eli Manning and Nick Foles of all people, have one incredible common denominator. They both defeated the Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Rob Gronkowski, and the New England Patriots in the game of all games, the Super Bowl.
In fact, the Giants and Eagles have both played the Patriots twice since the Cowboys even appeared in a conference championship game. New York is spinning on its own wheels, but the point here is that the Eagles run this division right now, not to mention the league as a whole, and look formidable.
A year ago we all laughed as Drew Pearson trolled the Eagles in Philadelphia at the NFL Draft. This season’s draft will see the Eagles have the Super Bowl Champion’s 32nd overall pick in the literal home of the Dallas Cowboys. It’s awful.
Philadelphia has the best defense in the NFC East, they have the deepest running back corps, their offensive line is in the running for the best (most might still take Dallas), and they have the ascending star quarterback, and it’s not the quarterback that won the Super Bowl!
The Cowboys are looking up at the Eagles. It hurts to admit, but it’s the truth. Here’s to hoping that we can make some ground up on them, because they did on us and now they’re looking back and celebrating.
