Way back in mid-December of 2017, Todd McShay of ESPN fame posted his first mock draft of the 2018 season. Back then, we still didn’t know the draft order or which underclassmen would declare for the draft. The Cowboys had the 16th pick at the time, and McShay used it on stud defensive tackle Christian Wilkins from Clemson. Since then, Wilkins has decided to return to school for one more year, so McShay had to go in a different direction for his second mock draft which was released today.

He may have gone for a different player, but he didn’t go for a different position. Once again, the Cowboys get a defensive tackle.

19. Dallas Cowboys

Mo Hurst, DT, Michigan

I’m higher on Hurst than others, but he’s a good value here in the mid-to-late first round. He’s highly disruptive in the middle and would be a good fit as a three-technique in Rod Marinelli’s scheme. With Jason Witten turning 36 this offseason, TE Dallas Goedert could be an option here as well.

Cowboys fans should be getting used to the name Hurst by now. Just yesterday we posted a roundup of mock drafts in which Hurst was the pick in six of the 11 mocks.

The Cowboys definitely need some help at the defensive tackle, but where they really need the help is at the 1-tech position, not the 3-tech, where they could play Maliek Collins or David Irving. Adding Hurst only gives them a glut of 3-tech tackles and no real solution at the 1-tech. The only way to solve it and get playing time for all three would be to move either Collins to the 1-tech or Irving out to defensive end.

Hurst may be a quality player, but is he the right fit for Dallas?

Other players that were still available in McShay’s draft and could be of interest to Dallas include:

Isaiah Wynn, G, Georgia - Wynn goes at pick 20 to the Lions. He could be a ready-made solution at left guard.

Rashaan Evans, LB, Alabama - Goes 21st to the Bills. The Cowboys might lose Anthony Hitchens in free agency, they need depth with Sean Lee always battling injuries.

Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama - Goes with the 22nd pick. Here is a disruptive run-defender who can also get after the passer. Should he be the Cowboys 1-tech?

Christian Kirk, WR, Texas A&M - 24th pick in this draft. He’s the kind of play-making WR the Cowboys could use to make this offense super-charged.

Is Hurst the right pick here? Or would you prefer one of the other guys McShay passed on?
