Fretting about the Dallas Cowboys sitting out free agency so far? We kind of knew it was coming, but that doesn’t mean we still can’t wish for new players to be added to the roster. Now that things are truly beginning to settle down, there are still plenty of names out there that could be a help to the Cowboys as they head into the 2018 campaign.
As we did previously, we are going to use a list of “best still available” from SB Nation at five positions of need. Players get signed all the time, so by the time you read this some of the players on the list might not be available anymore.
Wide receiver
We know that the Cowboys made a serious run at Sammy Watkins, would they try again with some of the cheaper alternatives?
Best Available: Terrelle Pryor, Jordan Matthews, Mike Wallace, Michael Crabtree
Other available: Eric Decker, Bruce Ellington, Brice Butler, Kendall Wright, Jeremy Maclin, Markus Wheaton
Personally speaking, the Cowboys should wait until the draft to pick a young, talented wide receiver that will allow them to plan for the future after 2018. Rolling with their current group plus a high draft pick, and involving Ryan Switzer more in the offense, will do for 2018.
Guard
Best Available: G Justin Pugh, G Jack Mewhort
Other available: G/C Matt Slauson, G/C Joe Berger, G/C Evan Smith, G Jahri Evans
Pugh is likely to expensive, he has teams competing for his services. As the days pass, taking a shot at Mewhort may become more economically feasible, but only if the Cowboys think he can be sure-fire starter for the foreseeable future. His injuries are worrisome, but he has talent. If not, Dallas could re-sign Jonathan Cooper, then look to the draft for competition at the spot.
Defensive Tackle
Best Available: Ndamukong Suh, Sheldon Richardson
Other available: Bennie Logan, Dominique Easley, Nick Fairley, Jay Bromley
Suh and Richardson are going to be way too expensive. Bennie Logan is an intriguing possibility. He would bring a solid veteran presence. Jay Bromley is another possibility.
Linebacker
Best Available: NaVorro Bowman
Other available: Connor Barwin, Lamarr Houston, Brian Cushing, Jerrell Freeman, Derrick Johnson, Jon Bostic, Kevin Minter, Gerald Hodges
If Navorro Bowman can’t find a home in the next day or so, maybe he does get on the Cowboys radar. He had a solid season once he ended up in Oakland, and would be a great rotational piece at linebacker. He has an offer on the table from Oakland, but is testing the market.
If the Cowboys really want to make a splash, they could look at swiping the Bills Preston Brown, who has an offer on the table but hasn’t signed it. He would preclude the Cowboys from having to dip into the draft for LB help, he’s only 25 years old. UPDATE: The Bengals just landed Brown.
Safety
Best Available: Tyrann Mathieu, Morgan Burnett, Eric Reid, Kenny Vaccaro, Tyvon Branch
Other available: Steven Terrell, Tre Boston, Quintin Demps, Reggie Nelson, Ron Parker, Mike Mitchell
The safety market is dead in free agency. Very little movement. Kenny Vacarro or Tre Boston are interesting possibilities, if the Cowboys decide not to get in on an Earl Thomas trade. Keep an eye on Morgan Burnett if he is still on the market after a few more days, he is very versatile.
As always, we want to hear from you? Who is tops on your free agent radar?
