StitchA's Personal Scouting Report: Late Round Blitz, Cycle 1

So, I'm going to mix it up a little with this one and hopefully implement a new segment. I've noticed people commenting on some of my posts about late round sleepers or pet cats that they have and I felt little bad knowing I had nothing to bring to them on those prospects. So I came up with an idea: why not take a day or two of the week (probably the weekend) to blitz through a handful of late-ish round prospects that BtBers have requested and give them a quick, lite watch and summary!

Now, these write-ups aren't going to be nearly as thorough as my other posts, nor have I likely viewed single plays multiple times to dig into all the details, but at least this can be an exercise to familiarize myself (and hopefully y'all) with some gents who may be flying under the radar. Hopefully this works out and you guys like it, and if you come by mid to late round players that you have some interest in, comment here or on any of my following posts and I'll try to get to them if I don't plan on writing them up in a comprehensive, individual post (and if my request list doesn't get too long haha).

James Looney (Cal – DT ; 6’3", 280 lbs, 32" arms) // Requester: D.White

vs Ole Miss, UCLA, Washington (2016), Oregon (2016):

Tale of two years: in 2016, he was a playmaking 3-tech in a 4-3 defense with terrific burst to penetrate in the middle with a decent little swim move, in 2017, he was a hybrid 3-4 DE/ 2-4 DT who took on double teams, had to play two gaps at times and couldn’t use his jump or burst off the snap as much.; Not many pass rush moves to him apart from the swim, plays with decent/good power and hand usage; Short arms – makes it really tough for him to shed blockers once engaged; Plays with slightly above average leverage to help him generate power; Great motor; Maybe undraftable based on his 2017 tape, but showed some nice traits in 2016 where you could maybe see a 4-5. Going to give him a 6th round grade, maybe a late 5.

.

Josh Sweat (FSU – DE ; 6’4", 251 lbs, 34.625" arms) // Requester: Jdrb

vs Alabama, NC St., Florida:

(Okay, Sweat honestly has no business being in the late round blitz group, but I saw him rated in rounds 3-4 somewhere and I guess that tripped me up)

Good vs the run, raw vs the pass (not many moves to him, but you see the inklings of a few [swim, dip, rip]); Late off snap a lot, but tough to deal with on the few snaps he jumps early; Inconsistent, but his long arms can help him get leverage at times – he doesn’t seem to know how to use his arms to the best of his ability (they are ENORMOUS); Good strength to push OLineman back – good at anchoring; Decent block shedding – he can just throw a guy aside sometimes, but inconsistent; Good motor, no quit to him; He plays like an LDE for me, could use some more good weight to him; Will be a good player vs the run early, with really good pass rushing potential. Low 2, maybe high 3.

.

Oren Burks (Vanderbilt – ILB ; 6'3", 233 lbs, 4.59 40) // Requester: astormtx

vs Alabama, Ole Miss, Georgia (parts):

Like his awareness and smarts, pass coverage in man and zone, flow to the ball and run fill; Don’t like his tackling and inability to shed blockers; Not a difference maker; His DLine gives him no help at all, they’re so bad; Pretty athletic looking; Team captain; Versatile, played Safety in 2015, 3-4 OLB in 2016, and 3-4 ILB in 2017; See him more as a MIKE, maybe a WILL, who will start mostly at special teams, but I think could develop into a decent starter. Mid to late 4th round.

.

Byron Pringle (Kansas St. – 6’1, 203 lbs, 4.46 40) // Requester: ReturntoDoomsday

vs Texas, Oklahoma St, Oklahoma:

7 receptions on 10 targets, 3 TD, 2 drops, 1 Kick Return TD; Exclusively an outside WR; Really nice as a blocker; Good route runner, typically a big play guy who isn’t bad on the shorter routes; Really good on off-coverage, but struggles to separate on press man ("shimmies" too much and wastes time); Typically an arm catcher, but will let the ball get to his chest a few times; Patient as a kick returner, sneaky good speed, but not overly elusive; Amazing tape vs. Oklahoma State (3 long TD receptions, 1 KO Return TD); Good motor; Will be a 25 year old rookie. 5th to 6th round grade.
