The Dallas Cowboys are one of the teams that still use a dedicated fullback in their offense. Since their identity is a run-heavy team, this makes sense. Keith Smith had filled that spot for the Cowboys in previous years, but he departed to Oakland in free agency, leaving a hole. The Cowboys have now filled that hole.
Dallas has traded for fullback Jamize Olawale, who coincidentally, played for the Raiders where Keith Smith just went. It’s a virtual fullback swap. The Cowboys gave up pick 173 (fifth round) in the 2018 NFL Draft in return for Olawale and the 192nd selection (sixth round).
So, to recap:— David Helman (@HelmanDC) March 20, 2018
-- Keith Smith signs in Oakland
-- Raiders send Olawale to Dallas
-- Cowboys send pick 173 to Oakland, get pick 192 in return
-- Dallas once again has a fullback, who coincidentally started his career here back in 2012.
Following the departure of Smith to Oakland, the Cowboys needed a new fullback. By swapping their fifth-round pick with the Raiders’ sixth-rounder and moving a little back on day three, they get a player that originally wore The Star back at a position of need. Dallas will now have back-to-back selections in the sixth thanks to today’s trade.
The former North Texas Mean Green back will be on a one-year deal in 2018:
Olawale is consider a blocking fullback but does have athleticism. He didn’t catch a lot of passes in Oakland, but when he did it was for a good YPA. Here’s a note from SB Nation Raiders blog Silver & Black Pride.
Olawale is more of a blocker than [Marcel] Reece was but has good hands, speed and athleticism. He showed it with big plays when he got the opportunity in 2016, With only 14 targets, Olawale caught 12 of them for a whopping 19-yard average. I didn’t think Bill Musgrave used him as a receiver enough then with Todd Downing as OC Olawale saw even less time.
The Cowboys don’t use their FB much in the receiving game either, but it’s good to know Olawale can do that. His primary responsibility will be to clear the path for Ezekiel Elliott and play special teams. Olawale was on the Cowboys practice squad way back in 2012, but has been playing with the Raiders since.
