Justin Reid (Stanford): 6’1", 204 lbs – JR

Vs ULCA:

  • Read the bubble screen and was there to blow up the play if the WR had made the catch.
  • Gets an INT off of a dropped pass from the TE. Good hands to adjust.
  • Good coverage in his zone to switch off on assignments and stay close to the other WR. Doesn’t get his head turned around so he doesn’t see the ball coming, but he’s in good positioning tight in front of the WR and the ball goes off his back.
  • Surprisingly effective at shedding WR blocks, like a matador. There was also a time where an OG was lead blocking for the RB and it was obvious that he wasn’t going to be able to get past the OG, but Reid just decides to charge and knife the OG to at least try to make him go backwards and alter the path of the RB.
  • Bit on a play action hard and left his zone empty for an easy TD throw.
  • Wow, WR delivers a brutal stiff arm on Reid and leaves him on the floor instead of the other way around.
  • I feel like he tries to over anticipate plays and it gets him in trouble sometimes.
  • Playing a lot of Slot CB snaps.
  • They’ve tried to stiff arm him twice since then and he’s not having it, making sure he takes them to the ground.

1 Reception on 5 Targets, 1 TD in his zone, 1 Pass Defended, 1 INT, 6 Tackles, 3 Tackle Assists, 1 Pressure

Okay first impression, seems pretty aggressive and I like that, but he gets overaggressive at times and bites on fakes. Like his willingness to tackle but want to see more before I make a determination on how good he is at tackling. Likewise with the run, didn’t get to see him in many snaps vs it. Generally pretty good vs the pass in man and zone, but has a few snaps where he gives it up and that’s a little worrisome.

Vs Utah:

  • Gives up a 12 yard reception on a come back route and immediately makes the tackle. I can live with that, not horrible for right now.
  • Been playing more like a slot corner this game. Very few "true safety" snaps.
  • Consistently had good man coverage throughout the first half.
  • Is just able to make the tackle to stop a TD on a goal line run. Gets too wide initially, but able to recover and bring him down. (first and goal)
  • On the second down, same exact goal line run, but this time he stays more narrow and tackles the RB faster. The pocket had caved in and the RB didn’t really have any space anyway.
  • Good tag team zone coverage on third and goal, both he and his CB switch/trade assignments well and make the QB have to hold it.
  • Gives up a reception on a shallow drag route – Reid’s teammate gets in his way and makes him have to get wide and give up space as he tracks the WR on the route. Tackles him, but only after 15 yards of YAC.
  • Mostly in man coverage this game, not as much zone.
  • INT! Great coverage on the route – he plays on the underneath and inside, using the boundary to his advantage and knowing that he has a single high safety to work with. Stays tight and is in the perfect spot to make the pick. Jumps and good hands to catch. If the QB had been able to lead the WR more, it could maybe have been a completion.

2 Receptions on 3 Targets, 0 PD, 0 TD Allowed, 1 INT, 6 Tackles, 1 Tackle Assists

Pretty good game from Reid. Generally very good in coverage this go around, showing out well in a large does of man coverage snaps. Didn’t bite on any fakes or play actions in this game and the two catches he gave up were acceptable. His tackling seems to be fine, although I still want to keep inspecting it more. And again, didn’t get to see him vs the run much, although he shows good willingness that I think would translate well to the run as well.

Vs Washington State:

  • Nice, gets a pressure off a slot blitz and actually sheds the LT on his way to hitting the QB, who does a good job to stay upright after the hit and throw it before going to the ground.
  • Nice job to shed an OT and make a tackle vs the run.
  • Good fight to work through the slot WR block on a bubble screen to help limit it to a short gain.
  • Playing a good mix of safety and slot CB snaps.
  • Out of high zones, he hasn’t really been good or bad. I guess the fact that I haven’t noted anything bad is a good thing in and of itself.

1 Receptions on 2 Targets, 0 PD, 5 Tackles, 0 Tackle Assists, 0 TFL, 1 Pressure

Pretty good game again, generally playing the pass well and staying close and his tackling has been solid. He doesn’t necessarily win every coverage rep, but he hasn’t been getting beat bad, and even when that’s happened, he hasn’t been getting targeted. I think I can feel comfortable with him as a tackler now. Not a major factor vs the run, but does his job. Surprisingly good at shedding blocks for a safety.

Vs San Diego St.:

  • Makes two solid tackles vs the RB Penny, but one the third opportunity, Penny jukes and is able to get around Reid.
  • I do really like how he comes up and is aggressive to make tackles. He may not be the best tackler, but he typically is able to wrap up and bring his guy down.
  • Nice blitz off the edge – gets small to sneak past the FB and able to grab the RB’s leg in the backfield and hold on long enough until his teammate finishes it up.
  • Again, pretty good at shedding blocks for a DB.
  • Bit a little on a play action and gave his assignment some space to make the catch. Reid recovers and makes the tackle on the play.

1 Reception on 1 Target, 0 PD, 6 Tackles, 3 Tackle Assists, 1.5 TFL

Nothing new to really add. Think he has generally solid tackling, may miss one here or there, but typically wraps up and gets his guy down. Love his physical mentality.

OVERALL: Justin Reid may be a little light, but he’d surprise you with how physical he is for Free Safety prospect. Reid has an all around very solid game to him, playing extensive snaps in coverage and showing out well vs the run as a tackler and in his ability to fill lanes. Experienced in man coverage out of the slot, where he took a large number of snaps, and while he doesn’t necessarily win every snap, he is typically in good positioning and demonstrates the ability to stay with his man well for a safety. He does get a little too handsy in man at times and I feel like he may get called for some Pass Interferences in the NFL. Capable in zone as well, nothing too flashy there. Is a little susceptible to biting on play action fakes due to his aggressive nature and quick reactions. While he’s small, he really tries hard vs the run and in making tackles. When he sees the play in front of him, he is aggressive in his approach, but doesn’t try to make the big hit, instead opting to wrap up. He does miss on occasion, but on the whole, his tackling is pretty solid. Also has a unique knack of shedding blocks for a safety. I think his football smarts are pretty good and his awareness is generally above average, save one or two bites on the play action here or there. Solid motor.

  • You know what, I’m a fan. His all around game is very appealing and he instills a sense of comfort in you that he will be a consistent presence, which is big for me in the safety position. He looks athletic with good play speed, and I think he can help you in single high, two deep, slot corner, and even near the box due to his hard-nosed mind set. Potential to grow into a really good player as well. Grading him as a high 2.
