Almost three months ago we talked about how then-soon-to-be-free-agent Sammy Watkins was a huge fan of new Cowboys receivers coach Sanjay Lal.
It seemed like that played a big role as the Cowboys were reportedly interested in Watkins. Thankfully they didn’t end up landing him and instead landed a much more affordable, and surprisingly similar (in a statistical sense), version of him in Allen Hurns.
Nobody really knew what to attribute the landing of Allen Hurns to, honestly. He only came on a two-year, $12M deal with $2.5M guaranteed, so it’s not like Dallas broke the bank for him. Allen appeared on NFL Total Access this Wednesday and gave us a little bit more insight to his decision-making.
On why Dallas was the right team for him, Allen Hurns said it was a few things: he loved his visit, the facilities, coaching staff (he specifically named Coach Garrett), and receivers coach Sanjay Lal.

Yes, Allen specifically mentioned Dak Prescott and Jason Garrett in his reasonings, but he also made sure to mention Sanjay Lal.
Sanjay has been heralded as a brilliant teacher, something the receivers group has been sorely lacking since the current iteration came together in 2013. Allen went a bit further and corroborated the idea that Sanjay does indeed have a bright mind when it comes to talking to wide receivers.
Allen Hurns specifically named Cowboys receivers coach Sanjay Lal as part of why he ultimately chose Dallas. https://t.co/RhOVfK1SXs

How much learning can you conceivably do in an hour?!
It’s obviously great that Sanjay helped the Cowboys land Allen Hurns, but it’s even greater that he’s such a bright mind for the sakes of Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley, Ryan Switzer, Noah Brown, and Deonte Thompson (let’s throw Lance Lenoir in too for those so inclined).
Maybe the Cowboys finally have the weapon they’ve needed in the receiving game, and maybe his name is Sanjay Lal.
