Nobody thought the Dez Bryant-Cowboys situation was going to take much time but it's taking up most of the offseason and still has everybody baffled, as Helman explains.

As we move into April, it’s easy to draw the conclusion that the Cowboys are waiting to see what happens in the draft before they decide what to do with Dez. Perhaps if they land a wide receiver at pick No. 19 or 50, they’ll feel comfortable moving on.

If you’re comfortable with that thought, though, shouldn’t you just do it? Because the longer this drags on, the more potential it has to be messy.

The fact that the Cowboys have expressed a desire to talk about his contract since January and still haven’t done it seems like a sizable red flag.

But they have already signed his potential replacement, and they’re doing a lot of scouting on a potential successor. There’s a lot of writing on the wall, even if we can’t necessarily read it yet.

I don’t know what’s going to happen with Dez Bryant and the Cowboys, but the longer we wait to get that answer, the more I suspect they’ve made their choice.

However you feel about Dez Bryant, it’d be great if the Cowboys could all feel the same thing.

There is apparent division among the Cowboys when it comes to a matter of importance such as who their top weapon for Dak Prescott is (that’s kind of a big deal). Breer notes that Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett are champions of sorts for Dez, but he also notes that others on the staff are less enthusiastic.

Whoever is talking about Dez Bryant, the fact that someone is talking corroborates the idea that the Cowboys are waiting to see what they land in three weeks before making a decision on his future. It would just be nice if, you know, they wouldn’t talk about it publicly. That’s all.

Lines are clearly drawn. You are convinced of Bryant’s stardom, argue he remains the Cowboys’ best receiver and believe the club is delusional to consider cutting ties with him if he refuses to accept a pay cut. Or in your eyes No. 88’s decline is evident, inexorable and the Cowboys are justified in seeking a reduction.

Regardless of where you fall in this debate, there should be at least one point of agreement, one Bryant and Jones must also accept:

The relationship has become dysfunctional. Bryant and the Cowboys must correct the partnership now or split.

The very vocal Josh Norman believes that Dez Bryant has more in the tank but will need to get the most out of what he has left.

“I’m not here to down the man, I’m not gonna down him. He plays the game at the highest level. I think for him, it’s all between here [points to brain]. Once he figures that out and once he feels that ‘When I step on the field I’m going to dominate whether it’s Josh Norman or a rookie coming into the league [lined up against me].’ ... Everybody’s got to figure that out. I’m still figuring it out.”

The Cowboys are spending quite a bit of money at the receiver position.

There are several important points that should be taken out of this. The biggest? The Cowboys have four wide receivers who make more than any player in their entire secondary. Byron Jones is the highest paid remaining player in the secondary for the Cowboys at just over $2.7 million. They are paying virtually nothing for safeties now that Jones is moving to cornerback. The four safeties on the roster listed by Spotrac combine to make less than $4.3 million. The Cowboys are paying less for the entire safety position than Hurns and Williams make on their own.

Kony Ealy will likely fill an empty defensive end slot left by Benson Mayowa.

The Cowboys made their sixth addition of the free agency period on Thursday, agreeing to a one-year deal with veteran defensive end Kony Ealy, a source confirmed.

The addition provides needed depth at the defensive end position, with DeMarcus Lawrence, Tyrone Crawford, Taco Charlton and Ealy likely at the top of the current depth chart. The move, however, doesn’t eliminate the Cowboys from drafting a pass rusher early in the upcoming draft.

Dallas has had top 30 pre-draft visits scheduled with defensive end prospects Harold Landry, Arden Key and Breeland Speaks. With Ealy only signed for a year, it’s unlikely this move changes much in terms of draft strategy.

The Cowboys will have their Dallas Day workouts on Friday where they invite any draft prospects that attended high school or college in the Metroplex to show what they got.

TCU safety Nick Orr and cornerback Ranthony Texada will head to the Dallas Day workout with the Dallas Cowboys on Friday looking to make a name for themselves.

Orr and Texada are among eight TCU players scheduled to attend, including offensive linemen Patrick Morris and Austin Schlottmann, quarterback Kenny Hill, linebacker Travin Howard and wide receivers John Diarse and Ty Slanina.

Tackle Joseph Noteboom, TCU’s highest-rated prospect, will not attend.

Looking at all the possible selections, would the blazing-fast cornerback Donte Jackson be of interest.

Want closing speed at cornerback? Jackson has it. A member of the SEC champion 4x100 relay team at LSU, Jackson ran a 4.32-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine and reportedly posted a 4.31 at his Pro Day this week. The Cowboys have drafted a strong group of young cornerbacks already, and 2015 first-round pick Byron Jones could move over from safety. A talent like Jackson, though, would really shore up the depth following two veteran departures (Orlando Scandrick to Washington, Bene Benwikere, Cardinals) and create more matchup options for new defensive passing game coordinator/DBs coach Kris Richard.

Would it be a good idea or a bad idea for the Cowboys to draft Taven Bryan?

At 6-foot-4, 290 pounds, Bryan is not the biggest defensive tackle, but he makes up it with his unique athleticism. Bryan shows the ability to play everywhere across the defensive line and the ability to stay on the field and be a menace on each play. He has an unbelievable motor to go along with quick movements.

Smaller defensive tackles have been having success in the NFL in recent years for their quickness and ability to shoot gaps and disrupt an offense’s backfield. He could be somewhat of a jack-of-all-trades type of player in the NFL, and Bryan has unbelievable quickness that will help chase down ball-carriers in the NFL.

With quick and powerful hands to go along with an array of pass-rushing moves, Bryan has the skills that are going to entice a lot of NFL coaching staffs. He was a star for the Gators in 2017 and once he gets more of a grip on the game and can work with professional coaching, Bryan is only going to become more of a nightmare for opposing offenses.
