NFL: NFL Draft Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys selected nine new players in the 2018 draft. Some of them will see significant playing time, others won’t even make the team. Let’s take a look into our crystal ball and pick which draftee will have the most impact this season.

The Favorites

  • Leighton Vander Esch - The Cowboys first-round pick and a guy who has a good chance of seeing significant playing time, possibly even starting at inside linebacker. That’s a hugely important position to play, and with all the new running backs in the NFC East, they are going to need a guy who can make plays. The Cowboys run defense was soft last year, maybe LVE can help correct that.
  • Connor Williams - He’ll have the inside track on the starting left guard position, right between two studs in Tyron Smith and Travis Frederick. If the Great Wall of Dallas returns, the offense could look much better this year.
  • Michael Gallup - The Cowboys are re-making their pass receiving corps, and no longer will have Dez Bryant eating up a majority of the targets. Gallup is being touted by many as a guy who could challenge for a starting spot, and has the skills to make things happen once he’s on the field.

The Question Marks

  • Dorance Armstrong - The Cowboys really wanted Armstrong and almost traded up to get him. Outside of DeMarcus Lawrence, the defensive end rotation is in flux. If Armstrong can get the snaps, there is no better way to have a huge impact than sacking the quarterback.
  • Dalton Schultz - Here is a wild card. With the retirement of Witten, tight end snaps are going to be open for the taking. Schultz is a good blocker, but many scouts think he could be better in the passing game than he showed at Stanford. He has an opportunity right in front of him.

The Longshots

  • Mike White - Nothing personal against Mike White, but if he’s making a huge impact for the team, that means something happened to Dak Prescott and that’s not good. Let’s hope it’s not White taking on a big role this season!
  • Chris Covington - He would have to come out of nowhere in training camp and preseason to see regular action in the linebacker rotation. It’s doubtful, but crazier things have happened.
  • Cedrick Wilson - Here’s a longshot that might not be as long as we think. He’s a talented guy who was drafted much later than many predicted. With the Cowboys uncertain receiving corps, who knows, he might find his way in.
  • Bo Scarbrough - The bruising back likely won’t see much time unless something happens to Ezekiel Elliott. So I guess in some ways were rooting against Bo making an impact, unless it’s in short-yardage or goal line, or as a battering ram to hep close out games.

Vote in our poll for the player you think will make the biggest impact this season from the draft class. Since almost everyone will vote for one of the top three, we also want you to hit up the comments and tell us your top pick in the poll, and then give us a name from the other two categories (“Question Marks” and “Longshots”) who will end up surprising us.
