The Cowboys have fans everywhere, they’re known as America’s Team for a reason.
Dallas, Forth Worth, California, New York, Florida, Canada, London, you name it there’s someone sporting silver and blue everywhere across the globe. Cowboys fans are everywhere.
Obviously there’s a large contingency of Cowboys fans in the DFW area, the locals if you will, and they generally root for all of the professional teams in the area: Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars.
Fans of all DFW teams have had a rough year of sorts. The Houston Astros won the World Series (beating the Rangers to be the first in Texas), the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl for the first time ever, and both Dez Bryant and Jason Witten are gone from the Cowboys.
There hasn’t been a lot to celebrate when it comes to DFW teams for a little while now. The incomparable Bob Sturm does a great job of documenting this every year; the last title brought to the metroplex was when the Dallas Mavericks won it in 2011.
Are the Cowboys the next title in DFW?
Opening odds for who will make the playoffs in the NFL this season are out, and they don’t exactly favor the Cowboys. It doesn’t help that they share a division with the reigning world champions or that Aaron Rodgers and Odell Beckham Jr. (among many others) are back with full health for another season.
Even with all that, it’s hard to find a better case in DFW than the Cowboys as far as the next title to be had. This isn’t exactly a boost of confidence for the football team, it’s more of a reality on the state of the other franchises.
The Mavericks have added some great pieces in Luka Doncic and Deandre Jordan, but the reality of the NBA is that it’s the Warriors and maybe Lakers as the cream of the crop for the next five or so years. There’s promise there, but it’s going to take time to be realized.
As far as baseball goes, the Rangers aren’t exactly cellar-dwellers, but they’re a ways away from catching the in-state Astros (or anyone else, really). The Stars were recently given around middle of the road odds to win next year’s Stanley Cup, but hockey is a sport that can always surprise you.
It really does feel like logic suggests the Cowboys (who were two games away from the Super Bowl just two years ago) are the most likely to hoist a trophy next. They’ve undergone some serious changes this offseason, but they have Ezekiel Elliott for 16 games which has a pretty solid success rate the only time it’s ever been the case.
What do you think, BTB? Who’s the next DFW team that will bathe in confetti?
Which DFW team is next to win a championship?
