Cutdowns are here, and every player on the bubble is likely a nervous wreck over the next 24 hours. If Deonte Thompson tuned in to 105.3 The Fan earlier today, he would have been able to take a deep breathe and relax just a little bit, because it sure sounds like his job is safe.
Jerry Jones was a guest on GBag Nation this morning and had high praise for rookie Michael Gallup, veteran Tavon Austin, and veteran Joe Looney. When mentioning how he’s excited to see those players perform for the Cowboys this upcoming season, he mentioned Deonte Thompson and his ability to line up on the boundary and use his speed to take the top off a defense. This was a bit surprising to hear, since Thompson isn’t necessarily considered a lock to make the 53-man roster, but when the owner talks about you in the same breath as guys who are in fact locks, that has to be a good sign.
Jerry Jones on @1053thefan all but confirms Deonte Thompson is making the 53-man roster.

When mentioning Thompson’s name in the same breath as Tavon Austin’s, Jones talked about lining both up on the outside and how that forces the defensive backs to take a step or two back to account for their speed. When speedy wide receivers line up on the outside, the cornerbacks always want to protect the back end of the secondary. Jones how corners taking a step or two back would give Ezekiel Elliott a step or two advantage when attacking the second level, which is a very good point.
We have yet to see much of Deonte Thompson this offseason due to him rehabbing a sore Achilles. Thompson was a guy that was on the bubble, and many observers suggested giving his roster spot to second-year player Lance Lenoir, but it sure seems like Jerry Jones is anticipating Thompson being around after the 4pm roster cutdown deadline on Saturday. That’s great news for Thompson, but bad news for Noah Brown, Lance Lenoir, and other wide receivers hoping to make the team.
We will find out for sure what the Cowboys will do tomorrow by 4pm.
