The Cowboys were back on the practice field today after having a day off on Friday. The team is prepping for their annual Blue/ White Scrimmage on Sunday. This morning’s walk-through was lighthearted but we got some hints on what today’s evening practice would focus on:
Jason Garrett say NFL officials will work with them over the next three days on new rules, especially the “hot-button issue” of the new helmet rule. pic.twitter.com/FHLUT87eZ2
— Joe Trahan (@JoeTrahan) August 4, 2018
NFL officials arrived to Cowboys camp today to go over new rules and points of emphasis with the coaches, players and media. The NFL officials will be working the Cowboys' practices over the next three days.
— Brandon George (@DMN_George) August 4, 2018
There will be a lot of goal line work in the highlights today as it will be the emphasis of today’s work:
Practice will be fun today. Goal line work will include live tackling. Team was already juiced in walkthrough. Tavon Austin in particular liked stirring the pot.
— Kate Hairopoulos (@khairopoulos) August 4, 2018
Lots of goalline work in am walkthrough. And lots of funny arguing. ‘You’re full of s—!’ yelled a laughing #Cowboys D leader Sean Lee at celebrating O. Eventually tho, TE TD and more O celebrating. pic.twitter.com/x7ej7PZWLb

Garrett says today’s goal line period will feature four live reps for the first team and four live reps for the second team. #cowboyswire

A few notes about here about who will and won’t be participating:
Jason Garrett anticipates Sean Lee participating in practice on some level today. #cowboyswire
— Rob Phillips (@robphillips3) August 4, 2018
To be clear, Sean Lee isn’t hurt, he’s been calling the defense from the sideline but the Cowboys want to be deliberate with him and not risk wear and tear.
A couple of Cowboys receivers will treated with extra caution:
Cowboys WR Deonte Thompson is dealing with a strained Achilles and isn't likely to practice this evening. He didn't practice Thursday ahead of the off day Friday. Also, Cowboys WR Allen Hurns is dealing with a strained groin.
— Brandon George (@DMN_George) August 4, 2018
There was a receiver who made his return to practice:
Noah Brown is in uniform for today’s practice

#cowboyswire
There was also a new/old face back at training camp just a few days after being released:
He’s back..Trey Williams, cut Thursday...back at Cowboys practice Saturday pic.twitter.com/FKV4BR5Kn7
— Bill Jones (@CBS11BillJones) August 4, 2018
Cowboys cut T Bryce Johnson and bring back RB Trey Williams.

And...here...we...go!

Speaking of receivers, the two standout receivers, Cole Beasley and Michael Gallup, were doing more of the same:

Pet Cat Alert!! Charvarius Ward picks off the pass intended for Michael Gallup:
Charvarius Ward just made one of the best plays of Compete Period, and I missed it . Michael Gallup had a step on him on a go route, Ward recovered and picked it off in stride. Looked like a bit of an underthrow from Dak #cowboyswire
— David Helman (@HelmanDC) August 4, 2018
Don’t worry Dave, somebody got it. Wowza!

Defense goes crazy after Charvarius Ward makes interception in compete period. Offense responds with taunting celebrations when they win the next battles.
— Kate Hairopoulos (@khairopoulos) August 4, 2018
Here’s some more highlights from compete period:
Zack Martin setting the tone on offense, it could get chippy fairly soon:

And... here comes the fight! Antwuan Woods picked on the wrong All-Pro center, Travis Frederick:
Scuffle during pass rush. The scary kind. Travis Frederick and Antwuan Woods had words with each other after both guys went to the ground during a rep. Woods shoved Frederick after some words were exchanged during a rep, and then all hell broke loose. #cowboyswire

102 flags have been thrown in this one-on-one pass rush drill. I counted
— Rob Phillips (@robphillips3) August 5, 2018
The mood is certainly tense out there and Zack Martin took it out on the Cowboys’ best pass rusher:

Zack Martin vs Demarcus Lawrence in pass rush drills...Tank looks great but Zack Martin is still the best player in camp...and on this team

Tank Lawrence decides to go low on La’el Collins and gets finished real quick:

A great rep here for Tyrone Crawford against the NFL’s best left tackle in Tyron Smith. That’s some relentless effort by a much leaner Crawford:

Goal Line Time!

That would be the first-team offense’s only win against the defense:

Kris Richard is the heartbeat behind this young defense, he’s their hype man:

(Scarbrough’s plunge the only score)
2nd Team offense: 2-for-4

Some nice goal line stands by the defense. Offense won a little, too. Bo Scarbrough was the first-team back for this drill. Zeke was held out. (They know what he can do) #cowboyswire
— Rob Phillips (@robphillips3) August 5, 2018
You can add another name to the punt return auditions, cornerback Duke Thomas:
Lenoir Jr., Tavon, Duke Thomas and Trey Williams are back for punt returns today. #cowboyswire
— Rob Phillips (@robphillips3) August 5, 2018
Dak Prescott connecting deep with Tavon Austin is starting to become an every day occurrence:

Another staple of camp is just to get the ball to Ezekiel Elliott whenever there’s the opportunity:

It’s not a vintage Terrance Williams catch if there isn’t a little toe dragging going on:

Oh wow! Cole Beasley has been uncoverable up to this point but Jaylon Smith had something else in mind:

CB Charvarius Ward has shined today, here he is breaking up the intended pass to Lance Lenoir:

Well, Cooper Rush’s placement wasn’t terrible but it could have been better.

Another bad ending to practice for Dan Bailey, who has missed five attempts in eight practices. Hopefully, he gets back on track.

That was all for practice today but tomorrow’s scrimmage should be pretty interesting. At the end of practice today, Jason Garrett decided to jump in on the conditioning drills:
