The NFC East-leading Dallas Cowboys calm the waters with win over Giants

Things are better for one week in Dallas.

The opening week of the NFL season leads to some of the most emotional, overblown reactions whether a team wins or loses. It seems though, when it’s a loss, and a bad one, things tend to go nuclear. So it was when the Cowboys came out of Carolina with a measly eight points and an 0-1 record. It was as though the season was over in some corners.

What a difference a week makes.

The Cowboys didn’t solve all their problems in Week 2, they still had a stretch in the middle of the game when their offense bogged down again, but just about everything else went right. The defense was again stout, really only giving up a busted-coverage touchdown in the late minutes, and a couple of field goals. They managed to sack Eli Manning six times and shut down Saquon Barkley in the running game. They ran a variety of stunts and blitzes that kept Manning off-balance and in control. The secondary smothered the Giants for most of the game, Odell Beckham was never a real factor.

The offense managed to hit the big play, a 64-yard bomb to Tavon Austin for a touchdown. And when they needed it, they put together a grinding, long drive in the fourth quarter that ended with an Ezekiel Elliott touchdown. That basically sealed the game. Dak Prescott was worlds away from where he was in the first game, looking determined and decisive, plus he used his legs for 45 yards rushing.

Even Brett Maher was perfect on the night.

Over the next few days, we’ll look at the tape and pick out the good and the bad. But after the Week 1 game, Cowboys fans can once again breathe. Week 2 didn’t solve all the issues, but it did do one thing.

It put the Cowboys at the top of the NFC East.

That’s a mighty nice view, and just shows how things can change in one week. Just win, baby!
