Report: Cowboys to carry Travis Frederick on 53-man roster versus placing him on injured reserve

No IR for Fredbeard.

Ever since he was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome recently there has been question surrounding Dallas Cowboys center Travis Frederick.

Will he start Week 1 for the Cowboys? Will he miss the entire season? Will it be something in between? There are no answers.

We did learn something on Sunday afternoon, something that certainly feels quite large. Many thought that the Cowboys would place Frederick on injured reserve to begin the season due to the level of mystery with his injury, but according to the Dallas Morning News that won’t be the case. The Cowboys are keeping Travis on the 53-man roster.

This immediately sends our brains in a flurry of directions. Is this good? This has to be good, right? The Cowboys wouldn’t not IR him if it wasn’t good, right? The answer is that we still don’t know.

The Cowboys have maintained that there are reasons for optimism, but medicine and science are tricky things. Dallas can’t predict Frederick’s medical status; however, they can certainly hope. From the DMN:

Club officials have determined the Pro Bowl center’s importance to the team outweighs the uncertainty of knowing when he can step back into the starting lineup. It’s a clear indication the Cowboys hope - it should be stressed there’s nothing stronger than hope at this stage - that Frederick may be able to return sooner than if he was placed on injured reserve.

Travis Frederick is a big voice within the Cowboys locker room. You might remember that two years ago he was even a team captain. While this move, rather a non-move, doesn’t concretely prove anything it at the very least does resemble a strong sense of hope.

Let’s all continue to hope that Travis Frederick progresses in his health.
