Cowboys Poll: How did Scott Linehan do against the Giants?

Linehan made some adjustments from week one to two. How good were they?

NFL: New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

After an abysmal offensive performance in Week 1, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan was one of the people who took the most abuse for it. There was some debate over how much of it was the play-calling by Linehan and how much blame belonged to the players for not executing. In last week’s poll, the vote-leader was that both Linehan and the players were responsible.

Well, there were some obvious changes made in the play-calling, and execution was much better, too. After being criticized for not going deep at all, Linehan’s first play was a nine yard pass to Allen Hurns. Two plays later, it was a deep bomb to speedster Tavon Austin that resulted in a 64-yard touchdown.

The next series began with a 12-yard pass to Deonte Thompson, a successful run for Ezekiel Elliott, and then a trick play where Elliott took the handoff and then pitched it to Austin on the reverse; the play picked up 15 yards. The very next play was an read-option for Dak Prescott, the first of many that night, that resulted in another 15 yards and later, a field goal.

After that, the Cowboys offense stalled, only scoring another field goal because of good field position after a defensive takeaway. The kind of success they flashed in the first quarter didn’t show up again until the fourth quarter, when the Cowboys went on a 14-play drive that ate up over eight minutes of time and resulted in a touchdown for Elliott.

Overall, the performance from the unit as a whole was markedly better, but there was still that long period of time in between where things were not in rhythm. Which brings us to this week’s question:

What grade do you give Scott Linehan for his playcalling against the Giants?
