This is the real reason the Cowboys drafted Leighton Vander Esch in the first round. Unfortunately, missing games due to injury is a certainty with Sean Lee, and Vander Esch makes for a legitimate fill-in for the linebacker.
Now, it seems that Vander Esch will be seeing even more snaps in relief of Lee. For Cowboys fans, that’s usually cause for giving up on the season, but the Boise State product has looked very good so far. In fact, Pro Football Focus has him in the top 15 of linebackers so far and graded him as the league’s best tackler at the position.
Leighton Vander Esch's 79.2 season defensive grade is the 14th highest defensive grade among LBs with at least 50 snaps this season. He also has the highest tackling grade among those LBs. #CowboysNation— PFF DAL Cowboys (@PFF_Cowboys) September 25, 2018
Still, he’s a rookie and the more snaps he sees, the more opportunity there is to show how much of a rookie he is. Vander Esch has looked good so far in limited snaps, but who knows how much longer that holds up? Plus, we still need to see how he holds up in pass coverage over time.
So we ask the question:
How confident are you in LVE filling in for Sean Lee?
