WEEK 3: THE BLAME GAME

Sunday came and went and, by Sunday night, the fanbase was ready to throw Garrett, the Joneses and Dak in the trash and move on from the "mediocrity" that is the Dallas Cowboys. The fans aren't pleased with how the season has gone, so far. If you live on Facebook like I do, you saw a bunch of post that were like these 2 post below:

Nobody wants to hear that the sun will continue to shine and rainbows still appear after a storm but that's the truth. As bad as Sunday was, it was only week 3 and the season still goes on. While everybody else is wanting their pound of flesh or their easy fix, I'm sitting here, being who I am. I didn't get upset, mad or sad when the game was over. I went on continuing to enjoy my football Sunday because we only get 25 weeks of this then we go something like 42 weeks without any on the field action. Then Monday comes, I think of what happened and what went wrong and how to fix it. As I think, I listen and read everybody's reactions. Then I heard it, the best explanation of this mess in all of its glory. These words came from Bryan Broaddus's mouth. "Game planning, Playcalling and execution." When 1 of the 3 is bad, it's overcomable. When 2 of 3 are bad, you can count on losing. When all 3 are bad......Well, somebody should lose their job. Sunday, 2 of 3 were horrid and maybe 3 of 3 but I wasn't privileged to their gameplan. So, at worse, 2 of 3 were horrid. But as we all have heard, "Mama said there would be days like this." This won't make any of you feel better but it is what it is.

While Jerry is keeping a calm face in public,

but in private, I can promise, he's investigating the problem intensely.

So what the heck is the problem? Most want to blame either, Dak, o-line or the Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator. But the team and Jason Garrett have pointed at "poor execution" by the offensive players. I question the legitimacy of this thought process. It's hard to execute when the playcalling is poor, at best. That kind of thinking led to letting go a "true leader with passion" in Dez Bryant. You might call me a fanboy but those words didn't come from my mind. Those words came from Inside The NFL's own Ray Lewis, who should know more about what a locker room needs to win. Dallas has the mirror image of Ray Lewis in coach Kris Richard. He might land the Head Coaching dig if things continue to degenerate, this season. My point being nobody is showing that passion at all during this season. Fans want JG to show that passion in public but, the truth be told, it isn't his style. And no matter how much the fans want him to, he just isn't interested. JG believes in staying calm and collected in public and passionate in private. Criticize him if you want but he is sticking to his guns, right or wrong. Dallas had the passion, that fans want JG to show, in a player that was the heart of the team and they chose to let him go because he criticized the playcalling and tried to cover it up by saying his "antics" were a distraction. That, in itself, is a glaring problem. Some in the organization couldn't be adult about it, they had to revert to kindergarten and tell the principal. That is who we have in under Garrett. That is a huge problem and til they resolve it, the inept offense woes may last the season.

A part of the inept offense was Dak having a bad day. He completed 19 of 34 for 168 yards and a TD. His completion percentage was 56%. He, also, had 2 INTs that were on the WRs. Those who criticize him, want Dak to be a gunslinger but it has been pounded into his head, since day 1, to NOT TURNOVER THE BALL. So, he never takes chances. Nevermind that he has 0 trusted WRs to throw to. Besides Beasley, the most trustworthy WRs are Deonte Thompson and Tavon Austin who aren't getting enough playing time. Currently, Thompson is getting 45% and Austin is getting 22% of the snaps. On average, a NFL offense gets about 60 snaps per game. Right now, Dallas is only getting 50 per game. That translates to 11 plays per game for Austin and 23 plays per game for Thompson. It's really hard for a QB to take chances when the most trustworthy WRs aren't on the field and doubt sneaks in the back of their mind. For the moment, Brice Butler seems to be the best option, based on the chemistry between him and Dak. Beyond that, it is anyone's guess on how you fix it.

Then there is the inability to attack deep. Fans try to point their finger at, either, Dak or the O/C, who isn't my favorite person at the moment, but in reality, it takes more than 3 seconds to go 15 to 20 yards down field. A QB is supposed to release the ball after 3 seconds which is this long: thousand 1 thousand 2 thousand 3, RELEASE. And if the o-line can protect for 7 seconds which Dallas couldn't, Sunday, then the QB should be able to attack down field, providing the WRs can get open. There is things in line that have to go, in order, the right way to allow the deep ball to happen. So, you see, there is no quick fix for the offensive woes that Dallas has. It's a mixture of things like: no trust in these WRs, trying to protect the ball, not seeing the open ones and poor playcalling to blame for the woes of the offense. The good news is these problems are all fixable, if they go back to basics and back to the fundamentals.

It's award time again.

AWARDS:

This week's WINNER OF THE BUSTIN' MAKES ME FEEL GOOD IS: BAKER MAYFIELD for breaking the Browns losing streak.

The LOSERS OF THE HEAD SLAP AWARD ARE: SCOTT LINEHAN AND JASON GARRETT for blaming the players for executing poorly. And the co-losers are, also, THE FANS WHO ARE GIVING UP ON THE SEASON.

KEYS FOR VICTORY:

The keys for victory should be fairly simple. If they do these 4 things, they will win without any problems:

  • Run Zeke Run.
  • Create turnovers.
  • ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK the defense!! By throwing down the field.
  • Sack Stafford
It goes without saying, hindsight is always 20/20 but it appears that the first quarter of the season is the preseason for the offense and the ridiculed offensive coaches. Maybe the starters should have played more and the coaches could have figure it out sooner. And maybe Frederick could've caught his condition sooner, giving the front office time to find a long term center while Frederick's out. Every year, the coaches and the fans make assumptions about what the team is but we don't find out til it's too late. While I understand the hesitation on playing your regulars, but isn't it what the preseason is for? Even when the preseason gets cut down to 2 games, the team has to find out what they have. The coaches appear clueless on what they have. That is on the coaches for sure, but it is, also, on the entire organization.
With that said, this is the Couch Coach reminding you to............LOVE EVERYBODY THAT YOU CAN!!

I can't get a handle on this team but, this week, I don't feel great about the team, Lions win, 20-13
