Tuesday night it was reported that the Cowboys are willing to deal a third-round pick in exchange for Earl Thomas. That’s cool.
If the Seahawks, ET’s current employer, liked that offer then they’d pull the trigger on it. That’s how trades work. The thing is Seattle isn’t ready to dance if the song is only a third-round pick. They’re more of a “second-round and change” kind of two-stepping partner.
This immediately raises the question... should the Cowboys up the ante to whatever Seattle is asking? Or should they at least raise their potential payment a little bit closer to whatever bar there is? It’s a fun question to debate especially considering the regular season starts on Sunday, and since it’s so much fun we took it to Twitter.
Let’s poll it up.

What would you do regarding Earl Thomas?
These are the four basic schools of thoughts on how to handle Thomas and the Seahawks at this point. The Cowboys can do nothing, hold firm, up the price a bit, or up the price to whatever the Seahawks want. What would you do?
Since BTB is the best collection of Dallas Cowboys minds throughout the entire interwebs we discussed it internally. There are varying opinions, as you can imagine.
Our own Tom Ryle feels the Cowboys should simply hold where they are for now and explore adding Thomas in free agency come March; however, Michael Strawn has evolved his thinking and is prepared to go up to a second-round pick payment.
Strawn: My thinking has evolved on this. Generally, I say you never trade draft capital for the right to pay an aging vet free agent money. However, it might make sense here for the Cowboys because they have a QB playing on a rookie deal and some cap space (something we’re not used to here). I’d be okay using a two, but not with anything else thrown in. Prefer they use a 3 and someone currently on the roster (Seattle needs WRs).
It’s an interesting idea to toss in a wide receiver as the potential “change” the Seahawks are reportedly seeking on top of a second-round pick. Everyone has tried to hypothetically deal them Terrance Williams, but it’s unlikely that is the appropriate “change.” There are other options, though.
So much of this whole idea depends on what happens between now and, honestly, whenever. What if the Seahawks start performing poorly and see a player on the Cowboys they could suddenly count as “change”?
Earl Thomas Math:

Seattle initially asked for 1st & 3rd (1,060 pts)
Dallas allegedly offered 2nd (400) but took Williams.
Dallas then tried 3rd (185). No takers.
Next year's 2nd is currently worth abt. 200 pts.
Cowboys should offer 2019 2nd to Seattle for Thomas. No brainer.
What if Dallas is in more dire need of safety help than we all realize? For instance, our own Danny Phantom is fine giving a second-round pick and some to-be-determined “change”, but aren’t we all.
I’d give a second-round pick up for Earl Thomas and sleep very comfortably about it, but what about you, BTB? What’s your limit?
