Jason Garrett held his final press conference of the week before the Dallas Cowboys face the New York Jets. Here’s a recap of what he had to say. (All answers are paraphrased and not actual quotes.)
Status on Tyron Smith, La’el Collins and Leighton Vander Esch
Collins won’t practice today, Smith will work on the side and there is an expectation that Vander Esch will practice today.
Randall Cobb
His back tightened up yesterday, if he does anything today he will be limited.
Jamal Adams is a very good safety
Jason Garrett spoke highly of Jets safety Jamal Adams, noting that he is active, physical, aggressive and a presence in both the run and the pass.
Addressing slow starts
Coach noted that you have to look at the individual plays to see what went wrong and said that turnovers were obviously the big problem last week in the early going.
Jamison Crowder is very good as an inside receiver
The Cowboys have played against Jamison Crowder when he was a member of the Washington Redskins and Jason Garrett said they’re aware that he’s very good on the inside. Said Crowder is QB-friendly in the way he presents himself for the ball and is dangerous on the run after the catch.
Why isn’t Jourdan Lewis playing more?
Dallas is struggling to generate turnovers and someone who’s been prone to produce some is Jourdan Lewis. Asked why he isn’t playing more, Jason Garrett said the Cowboys have a lot of competition at the position and he thought all the corners play well. He noted there are some packages where Lewis is on the field and that the competition goes on each week.
Work for receivers if Randall Cobb is out
Coach deferred on the question of who would play in Cobb’s place if he can’t go, but he did say that Amari Cooper is versatile and can work on the inside and outside and that they have confidence in Tavon Austin.
Could Ventell Bryant get some work at receiver?
Coach didn’t rule this out, noting that Bryant has picked up the offense in practice and that the way he’s practiced lately is one of the reasons that they activated him last week.
Antwaun Woods is doing better
Coach said he should practice today and that he is looking better now.
