The Cowboys will be taking on the Patriots this week, a tough assignment if there ever was one. Jason Garrett talks about the preparations for such a game. (All answers are paraphrased and not actual quotes).

Challenge on facing New England defense

Jason Garrett noted that the New England Patriots are “really good”, very well coached, opportunistic, and find ways to always stop the run. He complimented personnel at all levels of the defense, noted they affect the QB and are disciplined.

Patriots taking away the ball

New England has had success creating turnovers this season and Jason Garrett noted that ball security is a priority every week but that the Cowboys are obviously aware how good the Pats are at it.

How does New England stop the run?

Garrett discussed how sometimes the Patriots will play different fronts and at different times they play a variety of things. He noted that they are still disciplined in these different fronts, they set edges and they maintain gap discipline.

Appreciation for Tom Brady

Jason Garrett noted that Tom Brady is “arguably the greatest player that ever walked” in praising the Patriots quarterback. He complimented Brady and said his mental toughness is probably his best trait.

Holding a pass game that relies on its running backs

The Patriots have had a lot of success in utilizing running backs and Jason Garrett noted that they can pass in a variety of ways. He explained that you have to be prepared for anything and be disciplined in holding leverage against anybody. He also added that Patriots players are generally great after the catch as well so you have to rally and tackle.

Don’t think about statement games

There’s thought that the Cowboys need a “statement” win, but Jason Garrett wasn’t having any of that conversation.

Michael Bennett

Jason Garrett noted that Michael Bennett has played very well for the Cowboys and that they’re very pleased with his efforts (he has three sacks in three games). Garrett also noted that Bennett is constantly around the ball making plays, he has great instincts and feel and is hard to block.

Bennett is interacting very well

The world saw video of Bennett pumping up the Cowboys prior to last week’s game in Detroit. The video is here for you if you haven’t seen it.

Jason Garrett said that the Cowboys are gelling well with Bennett.

Julian Edelman is a hell of a player

Jason Garrett also had plenty of praise for Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman. He noted that the reigning Super Bowl MVP has passion and an incredible will in his game and that he can catch balls at all three levels of the defense. He’ll be a challenge on Sunday.

Player’s health update

La’el Collins won’t practice, DeMarcus Lawrence and Jeff Heath will do something as will Amari Cooper.

Cornerback Deante Burton poached off of Colts practice squad to replace Anthony Brown

The Cowboys also signed Marcus Henry to the practice squad as we noted on Tuesday evening.
