Cowboys free agency: Cowboys to sign defensive lineman Christian Covington

The Cowboys make a free agency move to bolster the defensive line.

The Dallas Cowboys have been extremely patient when it comes to this offseason’s free agency period. They’ve been more focused on taking care of their own as they’ve brought back both Jamize Olawale and Cameron Fleming (oh and Jason Witten, no big deal).

Dallas has finally struck outside of The Star in Frisco (no disrespect intended to Codey McElroy). With needs on the defensive line the Cowboys are bringing in a veteran who won’t have to travel very far, he’ll be staying in the Lone Star State. Welcome aboard, Christian Covington!

The Houston Texans drafted Covington back in the sixth round in 2015. He has 7.5 sacks to his name, you might remember him being featured on the Hard Knock series that chronicled the Texans. There was a point where he went back to his alma mater, Rice, and was celebrated for making the team.

Here’s what a Texans site had to say:

Covington was a solid rotational piece for the Texans defensive line. The former 2015 sixth-round pick from nearby Rice produced 65 combined tackles, 11 for loss, 7.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and even a pass deflection in his 50 games for the Texans, nine of which he started from 2016-18.

Covington is listed at 6’ 2” and 305 pounds so it’s safe to say he will be playing in the middle of the Cowboys defensive line.

This move has Rod Marinelli written all over it. He’s so vocal about his Mighty Orphans and loves to find his guys. For what it’s worth the Cowboys now have Chris Covington and Christian Covington. That won’t get confusing at all!
