If you were to look at the wish list of Cowboys fans entering the draft four years ago you would find the name Duke Johnson all over the place.
Plenty of folks wanted Dallas to draft the running back out of Miami with DeMarco Murray having just left for the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency; the position was in need of a new bell-cow. As we all know, the Cowboys elected to roll the dice, sort of fell into Darren McFadden, and a year later drafted Ezekiel Elliott and things haven’t been the same ever since.
Zeke needs a tag-team partner, though. The Cowboys have the best running back in football but more ammunition is never a bad thing. While the NFL Draft is certainly a way to acquire talent so is free agency, and often times via a trade.
The Cowboys are rumored to be interested in trading for Duke Johnson
A few weeks ago the Cleveland Browns made a bold move and signed free agent running back Kareem Hunt. Considering they also have former rookie sensation Nick Chubb on the roster that seemed to make Duke Johnson expendable. Cleveland.com noted on Monday that Johnson was drawing trade interest, and a few hours later the Cowboys were linked from another report.
SLATER SCOOP: Eagles and Cowboys have both expressed interest in trading for Browns RB Duke Johnson, source tells me.@MaryKayCabot first reported interest by multiple teams.— Andy Slater (@AndySlater) March 4, 2019
The Philadelphia Eagles are also named as a team interested in trading for Johnson which means he could be playing in the NFC East soon one way or another. For what it’s worth, the Browns and Eagles have made significant deals before what with the trade that landed Philadelphia their quarterback in Carson Wentz.
Johnson has yet to eclipse 400 rushing yards in a single season but his real prowess is in the receiving game. He’s had at least 500 yards in that department in three of his four NFL years (last season was the lone outlier). Duke signed a three-year contract extension with the Browns a year ago ($15.6M with $7.57M guaranteed) and he’s only 25 years old.
Dallas has six picks in the 2019 NFL Draft so perhaps they could move one of their later ones to get Johnson, maybe even a 2020 selection. Acquiring the Robin to Elliott’s Batman through this route would free them up from having to do so in the actual draft giving them the freedom to focus on other needs.
