Cowboys roster move: Cowboys reportedly waive two, Connor Williams “competing” for left guard spot

The Cowboys continue fine-tuning the roster.

Roster building in the NFL is a 24/7/365 venture and we’ve lived this lesson long enough to know how true it is.

We’re getting so close to the NFL Draft that we can taste it, and the Cowboys are re-tooling their roster ahead of it. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer they have waived two players:

  • Parker Ehinger
  • Aziz Shittu

Ehinger was acquired in the final days of the preseason when Dallas moved Charvarius Ward to the Kansas City Chiefs in a straight up trade. Ehinger, a guard/center, didn’t play at all and thankfully the Cowboys were bailed out by Joe Looney’s emergence while replacing Travis Frederick.

These moves aren’t necessarily shocking or ones that will cause you to lose any sleep, but something else in Archer’s report is worth mentioning. He notes that Xavier Su’a-Filo is expected to “compete with” Connor Williams for the starting left guard spot.

Williams’ frame has been discussed ever since the Cowboys drafted him in the second round last year, but reports are that he’s gained 10 pounds of muscle this offseason. Considering he was such a highly-touted selection last year it’s interesting that the Cowboys would be having him compete against XSF for the starting left guard spot, but this could just be offseason talk. They many want Williams to “feel” competition so he will work just that much harder.

Or it could be something real. You never know.
