It’s official. With the 128th overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys have selected Memphis running back Tony Pollard.

Mass Live

Arguably the most versatile prospect in this year’s class, Pollard is a projected Day 3 pick who lined up at every receiver position at Memphis, plus running back and kick returner. He tied the NCAA record for career kick return touchdowns last December at seven. A month later, Pollard led all players at the Senior Bowl with 60 rushing yards and scored a 21-yard rushing touchdown.

Now, none of his individual traits is remarkable by NFL standards. Pollard is a prospect greater than the sum of his skills. He’s a natural football player who could carve out a pro career strictly as a kick returner. Or he might become a Swiss Army knife filling a variety of offensive and special teams roles.

His receiving skills are a relative question mark for someone who caught 39 passes last season. And his blocking needs heavy work. However, there’s no question he packs enough clay for Belichick and Co. to mold him into a useful Patriot — especially with a job opening at kick returner.

It’s hard not to get excited about a player with good size/speed and the type of per-touch production he put together at Memphis during his three-year stay. However, finding Pollard’s NFL fit could be easier said than done as he’s not a natural runner and is behind in ball skills and route-running as a receiver. He has enough talent to handle the packaged/gadget plays, but with kick-return value diminishing league-wide, he will need additional fundamentals training at one position to be more than a shiny toy that is rarely out of the box.
