Report: Cowboys “would still be in the mix” for free agent safety Eric Berry

Are the Cowboys still in the free agent safety market, specifically with regards to Eric Berry?

Over the course of free agency the Dallas Cowboys made a move at the safety position, but not the one that many talked about for over a year.

There was no Earl Thomas hoisting up his blue and white jersey during a press conference at The Star, instead it was George Iloka who joined Kris Richard’s secondary. For a brief moment in time it looked it might have been a different star player as Eric Berry officially visited the team, but nothing ultimately came of it.

Maybe that nothing isn’t going to stay nothing though, after all anything can happen in the NFL. On Thursday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that there are at least three teams still interested in Berry’s service, and the only one who he named specifically was the Cowboys. He noted that Dallas “would still be in the mix” for the the 30-year old.

Rapoport notes that considering where we’re at (mid-June), Berry joining a team might be something that happens right before training camp. Teams are wrapping up minicamps and are going to enjoy a bit of vacation before camps begin; the Cowboys will head to Oxnard in late July... could Berry be among them?

There are a lot of reasons to consider Eric Berry as an option for the Cowboys. The draft came and went and while they drafted Donovan Wilson out of Texas A&M they are still in need of legitimate weapons at safety. If they shored that up then we’re talking about a defense that from top to bottom would have at least one capable playmaker.

Eric Berry, the dream still lives.
